Mahamrityunjaya Mantra ·
The Vedic prayer to the three-eyed Shiva for release from death, as a ripe cucumber is released from its stalk.
oṁ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam । urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyormukṣīya māmṛtāt ॥
Om. We worship the three-eyed one (Shiva), fragrant, who increases nourishment and well-being. As a cucumber is released from its stalk, may I be freed from death, but not from immortality.
About this text
The Mahamrityunjaya ("great victory over death") mantra is a verse of the Rigveda (7.59.12), also found in the Yajurveda, addressed to Tryambaka, the three-eyed one, identified with Shiva (Rudra). It asks to be freed from death as easily as a ripe cucumber falls from the vine, and not to be separated from immortality. In popular recitation it is preceded by Om, as here; the Vedic text itself begins with त्र्यम्बकं, and in Vedic chanting it carries accent marks that are not shown on this page.
How it is recited
It is commonly chanted 108 times on a rudraksha mala, on Mondays, in Shravan, or for someone who is ill. Formal Vedic chanting with accents is learned from a teacher. Practices vary.
