About this text
The Annapurna Stotram is a hymn to Annapurna, the form of Parvati who gives food, worshipped as the queen of Kashi (Varanasi), where Shiva himself is pictured as a beggar receiving alms from her. It is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Each of the first ten verses praises her beauty, her ornaments and her powers, as Gauri, Uma, Kaumari, Dakshayani and the consort of Vishveshvara, and ends with the same prayer: "Mother Annapurna, ruler of Kashi, give me alms." The eleventh verse asks for the alms of knowledge and detachment, and the twelfth says that Parvati is my mother, Shiva my father, Shiva's devotees my kin and the three worlds my home.
