About this text
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya means "Om, salutation to the Lord Vasudeva". Counting its syllables gives twelve, so it is known as the Dwadashakshari (twelve-syllable) mantra. Vasudeva is a name of Krishna as the son of Vasudeva, and in Vaishnava thought also of Vishnu as the one who dwells in all beings. In the Bhagavata Purana the sage Narada teaches this mantra to the boy Dhruva, and the Purana itself opens with it. It is among the most important mantras of Vaishnava traditions.
How it is recited
It is chanted aloud, softly or silently, often 108 times on a tulsi mala, especially on Ekadashi and Thursdays and in Vishnu or Krishna worship. Customs vary.
