About this text
Bhairav is the fierce form Shiva took to lift the burden of the world, and is worshipped as the kotwal, the guardian, of Kashi. This chalisa praises him in his many forms, Batuk Bhairav, Kaal Bhairav, Nath Bhairav and others: dark and huge, with red eyes, matted hair and the moon on his head, bells at his waist, trident, damru and whip in hand, attended by ghosts and spirits and dancing with the sixty-four yoginis. A long passage hails him by a string of names. Its closing verses name Sundar Das, who wrote it near Prayag by the hermitage of the sage Durvasa, and say that whoever recites it sees every wish fulfilled.
How it is recited
