The fifth book of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas: Hanuman crosses the ocean, finds Sita in Lanka, burns the city and returns to Ram, who marches to the sea.

Part 1 / 9: Hanuman crosses the ocean

śāntaṃ śāśvatamaprameyamanaghaṃ nirvāṇaśāntipradaṃ brahmāśambhuphaṇīndrasevyamaniśaṃ vedāntavedyaṃ vibhum । rāmākhyaṃ jagadīśvaraṃ suraguruṃ māyāmanuṣyaṃ hariṃ vande'haṃ karuṇākaraṃ raghuvaraṃ bhūpālacūṙāmaṇim ॥

I worship Ram, the lord of the world: peaceful, eternal, beyond measure and without fault, the giver of liberation and supreme peace; ever served by Brahma, Shiva and Shesha, known through the Vedanta, all-pervading; the teacher of the gods, Hari who took a human form through his maya, the ocean of compassion, the best of the Raghus, the crown jewel of kings.

nānyā spṛhā raghupate hṛdaye'smadīye satyaṃ vadāmi ca bhavānakhilāntarātmā । bhaktiṃ prayaccha raghupuṅgava nirbharāṃ me kāmādidoṣarahitaṃ kuru mānasaṃ ca ॥

O Lord of the Raghus, I speak the truth, and you, the inner self of all, know it: there is no other desire in my heart. O best of the Raghus, grant me full devotion, and make my mind free of desire and the other faults.

atulitabaladhāmaṃ hemaśailābhadehaṃ danujavanakṛśānuṃ jñānināmagragaṇyam । sakalaguṇanidhānaṃ vānarāṇāmadhīśaṃ raghupatipriyabhaktaṃ vātajātaṃ namāmi ॥

I bow to the son of the Wind: the home of unequalled strength, his body shining like a golden mountain, a fire to the forest of demons, foremost among the wise, the store of all virtues, lord of the monkeys, the beloved devotee of Ram.

jāmavaṃta ke bacana suhāe । suni hanumaṃta hṛdaya ati bhāe ॥

Jambavan's fine words pleased Hanuman's heart deeply.

taba lagi mohi parikhehu tumha bhāī । sahi dukha kaṃda mūla phala khāī ॥

He said: 'Brothers, wait for me here, bearing hardship and living on roots, bulbs and fruit,

jaba lagi āvauṃ sītahi dekhī । hoihi kāju mohi haraṣa biseṣī ॥

until I return after seeing Sita. The task will succeed; I feel great joy.'

yaha kahi nāi sabanhi kahum̐ māthā । caleu haraṣi hiyam̐ dhari raghunāthā ॥

Saying this, he bowed his head to them all, and set out joyfully, holding Raghunath in his heart.

siṃdhu tīra eka bhūdhara suṃdara । kautuka kūdi caṙheu tā ūpara ॥

On the seashore stood a fine mountain; he leapt onto it playfully.

bāra bāra raghubīra sam̐bhārī । tarakeu pavanatanaya bala bhārī ॥

Again and again remembering Raghubir, the son of the Wind sprang up with great force.

jehiṃ giri carana dei hanumaṃtā । caleu so gā pātāla turaṃtā ॥

The mountain on which Hanuman set his foot sank at once into the underworld.

jimi amogha raghupati kara bānā । ehī bhām̐ti caleu hanumānā ॥

As Raghupati's unfailing arrow flies, so Hanuman went on.

jalanidhi raghupati dūta bicārī । taiṃ maināka hohi śramahārī ॥

The ocean, knowing him to be Raghupati's messenger, said to Mount Mainaka: 'Go and relieve his weariness.'

hanūmāna tehi parasā kara puni kīnha pranāma । rāma kāju kīnheṃ binu mohi kahām̐ biśrāma ॥

Hanuman touched the mountain with his hand and bowed, saying: 'How can I rest before I have done Ram's work?'

jāta pavanasuta devanha dekhā । jānaiṃ kahum̐ bala buddhi biseṣā ॥

The gods watched the son of the Wind going, and wished to know the measure of his strength and wisdom.

surasā nāma ahinha kai mātā । paṭha:inhi āi kahī tehiṃ bātā ॥

They sent Surasa, the mother of serpents; she came and spoke to him:

āju suranha mohi dīnha ahārā । sunata bacana kaha pavanakumārā ॥

'Today the gods have given me my food.' Hearing this, the son of the Wind said:

rāma kāju kari phiri maiṃ āvauṃ । sītā ka:i sudhi prabhuhi sunāvauṃ ॥

    'राम जी का काम करके मैं लौट आऊँ और सीता जी की खबर प्रभु को सुना दूँ,

    'Let me do Ram's work and come back, and tell my Lord news of Sita;

taba tava badana paiṭhiha:um̐ āī । satya kaha:um̐ mohi jāna de māī ॥

then I will come and enter your mouth. I tell you truly, mother, let me go.'

kavanehum̐ jatana dei nahiṃ jānā । grasasi na mohi kaheu hanumānā ॥

When by no means would she let him go, Hanuman said: 'Then why not swallow me?'

jojana bhari tehiṃ badanu pasārā । kapi tanu kīnha duguna bistārā ॥

She opened her mouth a yojana wide; the monkey made his body twice as large.

soraha jojana mukha tehiṃ ṭhaya:ū । turata pavanasuta battisa bhaya:ū ॥

She made her mouth sixteen yojanas; at once the son of the Wind became thirty-two.

jasa jasa surasā badanu baṙhāvā । tāsu dūna kapi rūpa dekhāvā ॥

However much Surasa widened her mouth, the monkey showed a form twice as big.

sata jojana tehiṃ ānana kīnhā । ati laghu rūpa pavanasuta līnhā ॥

She made her mouth a hundred yojanas; the son of the Wind took a very tiny form,

badana pa:iṭhi puni bāhera āvā । māgā bidā tāhi siru nāvā ॥

entered her mouth and came out again, then bowed his head and asked leave to go.

mohi suranha jehi lāgi paṭhāvā । budhi bala maramu tora maiṃ pāvā ॥

She said: 'I have found the secret of your wisdom and strength, which the gods sent me to test.

rāma kāju sabu karihahu tumha bala buddhi nidhāna । āsiṣa dei ga:ī so haraṣi caleu hanumāna ॥

You will accomplish all of Ram's work, O treasury of strength and wisdom.' Giving this blessing she left, and Hanuman went on joyfully.

nisicari eka siṃdhu mahum̐ raha:ī । kari māyā nabhu ke khaga gaha:ī ॥

A demoness lived in the sea who by magic caught the birds of the sky.

jīva jaṃtu je gagana uṙāhīṃ । jala biloki tinha kai parichāhīṃ ॥

Whatever creatures flew in the sky, she saw their shadows on the water

gaha:i chāham̐ saka so na uṙāī । ehi bidhi sadā gaganacara khāī ॥

and seized the shadow, so they could not fly; in this way she always ate the sky-goers.

soi chala hanūmāna kaham̐ kīnhā । tāsu kapaṭu kapi turatahiṃ cīnhā ॥

She played the same trick on Hanuman; the monkey at once saw through her deceit.

tāhi māri mārutasuta bīrā । bāridhi pāra gaya:u matidhīrā ॥

The brave, steady-minded son of the Wind killed her and crossed the ocean.

tahām̐ jāi dekhī bana sobhā । guṃjata caṃcarīka madhu lobhā ॥

There he saw the beauty of the woods, with bees humming, greedy for honey.

nānā taru phala phūla suhāe । khaga mṛga bṛṃda dekhi mana bhāe ॥

Many kinds of trees with lovely fruit and flowers, and flocks of birds and herds of deer, delighted his heart.

saila bisāla dekhi eka āgeṃ । tā para dhāi caḍheu bhaya tyāgeṃ ॥

Seeing a huge mountain ahead, he ran up it without fear.

umā na kachu kapi kai adhikāī । prabhu pratāpa jo kālahi khāī ॥

(Shiva says:) Uma, this is no greatness of the monkey; it is the glory of the Lord, which devours even Time.

giri para caḍhi laṃkā tehiṃ dekhī । kahi na jāi ati durga biseṣī ॥

Climbing the mountain he saw Lanka, a fortress so formidable it cannot be described,

ati utaṃga jalanidhi cahu pāsā । kanaka koṭa kara parama prakāsā ॥

very high, with the sea all around, its golden ramparts blazing with light.

kanaka koṭa bicitra mani kṛta suṃdarāyatanā ghanā । ca:uhaṭṭa haṭṭa subaṭṭa bīthīṃ cāru pura bahu bidhi banā । gaja bāji khaccara nikara padacara ratha barūthanhi ko ganai । bahurūpa nisicara jūtha atibala sena baranata nahiṃ banai ॥

Golden ramparts set with many gems, and countless beautiful houses; crossroads, markets, fine roads and lanes: the lovely city is laid out in many ways. Elephants, horses, mules, crowds of foot soldiers and chariots - who could count them? Troops of mighty demons of many forms make an army beyond description.

bana bāga upabana bāṭikā sara kūpa bāpīṃ sohahīṃ । nara nāga sura gaṃdharba kanyā rūpa muni mana mohahīṃ । kahum̐ māla deha bisāla saila samāna atibala garjahīṃ । nānā akhārenha bhirahiṃ bahu bidhi eka ekanha tarjahīṃ ॥

Woods, gardens, groves, orchards, lakes, wells and stepwells are beautiful. Daughters of men, nagas, gods and gandharvas, by their beauty, enchant even sages. Somewhere wrestlers with huge bodies, like mountains and immensely strong, roar; in many arenas they grapple in many ways and challenge one another.

kari jatana bhaṭa koṭinha bikaṭa tana nagara cahum̐ disi racchahīṃ । kahum̐ mahiṣa mānuṣa dhenu khara aja khala nisācara bhacchahīṃ । ehi lāgi tulasīdāsa inha kī kathā kachu eka hai kahī । raghubīra sara tīratha sarīranhi tyāgi gati paihahiṃ sahī ॥

Millions of warriors of fearsome body guard the city carefully on all four sides. Somewhere the wicked demons eat buffaloes, men, cows, donkeys and goats. Tulsidas has told a little of their story for this reason: they will surely give up their bodies at the holy place of Raghubir's arrows and attain the highest state.

pura rakhavāre dekhi bahu kapi mana kīnha bicāra । ati laghu rūpa dharauṃ nisi nagara karauṃ pa:isāra ॥

Seeing the many guards of the city, the monkey thought: 'I will take a very small form and enter the city at night.'

About this text

Sunderkand is the fifth of the seven books (kands) of the Ramcharitmanas, the Awadhi retelling of the Ramayana by Tulsidas. It opens with three Sanskrit shlokas and continues in chaupai, doha, soratha and chhand metres, with sixty numbered dohas. It follows Hanuman as he leaps the ocean, meets Surasa and Lankini, finds Vibhishan and then Sita in the Ashok grove, gives her Ram's ring, is brought before Ravan, burns Lanka and returns with Sita's crest jewel. The second half tells of the march to the sea, Mandodari's and Vibhishan's counsel to Ravan, Vibhishan's refuge with Ram, Ravan's spies, and the ocean yielding to Ram. Because Hanuman's devotion and success are its centre, it is the book most often recited on its own. The text here is collated from several online editions; where they differ only in spelling or punctuation, the reasons for each choice are recorded. One line (in a chaupai after doha 58, the ocean's words, "ढोल गवाँर...") is read differently by commentators, and its meaning notes both readings.

How it is recited

Sunderkand is commonly recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, in times of difficulty, and before new undertakings, often by a family or group together, beginning with a prayer to Ganesh and Hanuman and ending with the Hanuman aarti. A full recitation takes about two to three hours; many read it over several sittings. Customs vary.
