About this text

The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn in Awadhi, traditionally attributed to Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet of the Ramcharitmanas. It has forty chaupais (hence chalisa, from chalis, forty) between two opening dohas and one closing doha. The verses recall Hanuman's form, his service to Ram in the Ramayana (finding Sita, burning Lanka, bringing the sanjivani herb) and the protection he gives devotees. The closing chaupais describe the benefits of recitation.

Printed and online editions differ in small spellings (for example व/ब and श/स). The text here was compared line by line across independent publications; the method is described in our editorial policy.

How it is recited

Many devotees recite it on Tuesdays and Saturdays, often after bathing and in front of an image of Hanuman or Ram, though customs vary by family and region. Some recite it once daily; others repeat it 7, 11 or 108 times on special occasions.
