About this text
This aarti, in simple Sanskrit, asks Shiva, bearer of the Ganga and lord of Girija, to protect the devotee always. It then paints a scene on Kailash: a grove of wish-fulfilling trees humming with bees, cuckoos and swans, a peacock dancing, and a jewelled hall where Gauri plays beside Shiva while the gods bow and their wives dance. Its lines imitate the sounds of the mridanga, flute, anklets and damaru. It describes Shiva's form, fair as camphor, five-faced and three-eyed, with the moon, matted locks, the fire on his forehead, serpents, skulls and ash, and Parvati at his left side, and has Brahma himself perform the aarti while reciting the Veda. The last stanza says whoever recites or hears it with devotion reaches union with Shiva. "Om Har Har Har Mahadev" is sung after every stanza. In a few lines the two editions differ; the reading of the more-visited site is shown and both readings are listed.
How it is recited
It is sung at the evening aarti of Shiva, on Mondays, in Shravan and on Mahashivratri, with "Om Har Har Har Mahadev" after each stanza. Customs vary.
