Sukhkarta Dukhharta (Ganesh Aarti) ·

The Marathi aarti to Ganesh, giver of joy and remover of sorrow, sung across Maharashtra during Ganeshotsav.

sukhakartā dukhahartā vārtā vighnācī । nuravī pūrvī prema kṛpā jayācī । sarvāṃgī suṃdara uṭī śeṃdurācī । kaṃṭhī jhaḻake māḻa muktāphaḻāṃcī ॥

The giver of joy and remover of sorrow, who does away with even the mention of obstacles; whose love and grace leave nothing wanting. His whole body is beautiful with a coat of vermilion, and a garland of pearls gleams at his throat.

jaya deva jaya deva jaya maṃgalamūrtī । darśanamātre manakāmanā puratī । jaya deva jaya deva ॥

Victory, O Lord, victory, O embodiment of auspiciousness! The mere sight of you fulfils the wishes of the heart. Victory, O Lord, victory.

ratnakhacita pharā tuja gaurīkumarā । caṃdanācī uṭī kuṃkumakeśarā । hirejaḍita mukuṭa śobhato barā । ruṇajhuṇatī nūpure caraṇī ghāgariyā ॥

O son of Gauri, jewel-studded ornaments adorn you, with sandal paste, kumkum and saffron; a diamond-set crown looks splendid on you, and anklets with little bells tinkle on your feet.

jaya deva jaya deva jaya maṃgalamūrtī । darśanamātre manakāmanā puratī । jaya deva jaya deva ॥

Victory, O Lord, victory, O embodiment of auspiciousness! The mere sight of you fulfils the wishes of the heart. Victory, O Lord, victory.

lambodara pītāmbara phanivara vaṃdanā । saraḻa soṃḍa vakratuṃḍa trinayanā । dāsa rāmācā vāṭa pāhe sadanā । saṃkaṭī pāvāve nirvāṇī rakṣāve suravaravaṃdanā ॥

Pot-bellied, clad in yellow, honoured by the king of serpents; with a straight trunk curving at the tip, and three eyes. Ram's servant waits for you at his home: come to us in trouble and protect us at the last, O you whom the greatest gods worship.

About this text

Sukhkarta Dukhharta is a Marathi aarti to Ganesh, traditionally attributed to the saint Samarth Ramdas. Its three stanzas describe Ganesh as the giver of joy who removes even the mention of obstacles, his body smeared with vermilion and a pearl necklace at his throat; the son of Gauri, adorned with sandal, kumkum and saffron, a diamond crown and tinkling anklets; and the pot-bellied, yellow-robed, three-eyed lord with the curved trunk. In the last stanza the poet, calling himself the servant of Ram, asks Ganesh to come in times of trouble and protect him at the last. The refrain "Jai dev jai dev jai Mangalmurti" says that the mere sight of him fulfils the heart's wishes. Where editions differ on a word, we follow the reading most of them give: in the third stanza some editions read फणिवरबंधना (girdled with a great serpent) where most give फनिवर वंदना.

How it is recited

It is sung morning and evening before the Ganesh idol during the ten days of Ganeshotsav, and at the start of the aarti sequence in Maharashtrian homes, with clapping and cymbals while the lamp is waved. Customs vary.
