Ekadashi · एकादशी
Ekadashi, the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight, is the most widely kept fast day in Vaishnava practice. There are about twenty-four in a year, each with its own name and story (Nirjala, Devshayani, Prabodhini and others), and an extra two in a year with an additional (adhik) month.

How the date is determined
The Smarta date is the day Ekadashi prevails at sunrise (with rules for when Dashami touches it). Vaishnava traditions avoid an Ekadashi touched by Dashami before sunrise and may keep the next day; where the two differ, both dates are shown.
Devotees fast (from grains in particular, or completely), worship Vishnu, recite his names and stay awake in devotion. The fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, within the prescribed time (parana).
