About this text

Om Jai Jagdish Hare is a Hindi aarti to Vishnu as Jagdish, lord of the universe. It is commonly attributed to Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri, who is said to have written it around 1870, and its melody is the model for many other aartis such as Om Jai Lakshmi Mata and Om Jai Shiv Omkara. In simple words it asks the Lord, who is mother and father, the indwelling and supreme being, to remove suffering, forgive ignorance and grant devotion. Each line is sung with an echo beginning "Swami…", and the refrain "Om jai Jagdish Hare" follows each stanza.

Some editions abbreviate the sung lines and some add a further stanza (तन मन धन सब कुछ है तेरा); the fuller sung lines and the ending most of the sources compared share are given here.

How it is recited

It is sung at the end of almost any puja, at Satyanarayan katha, in temples at the evening aarti and at home, while waving a lamp. Customs vary.
