Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach ·

The protective hymn of five-faced Hanuman: a meditation on his five faces, the mantras for each face, and the benefits of recitation.

atha dhyānaṃ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇusarvāṅgasundari । yatkṛtaṃ devadevena dhyānaṃ hanumataḥ priyam ॥

(Garuda says:) Now I shall describe the meditation; listen, O lovely one: the meditation on Hanuman that the god of gods made, which is dear to him.

pañcavaktraṃ mahābhīmaṃ tripañcanayanairyutam । bāhubhirdaśabhiryuktaṃ sarvakāmārthasiddhidam ॥

Five-faced, very formidable, with fifteen eyes and ten arms, the giver of every wish and purpose.

pūrvaṃ tu vānaraṃ vaktraṃ koṭisūryasamaprabham । danṣṭrākarālavadanaṃ bhṛkuṭīkuṭilekṣaṇam ॥

The eastern face is that of a monkey, bright as ten million suns, with fearsome tusks and a frowning, curved gaze.

About this text

The Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach is a Sanskrit protective hymn (kavach, "armour") to Hanuman in his five-faced form. In the meditation verses his five faces are described: the monkey face to the east, Narasimha to the south, Garuda to the west, Varaha (the boar) to the north, and Hayagriva (the horse-headed) facing upward, with ten arms holding weapons. Tradition links this form to the story of Hanuman rescuing Ram and Lakshman from Mahiravana in the underworld. The middle part of the text consists of the formal setting of the mantra (viniyoga), the placing of the mantra on the fingers and body (nyasa), and mantras with seed syllables addressed to each face, asking for protection from enemies, poison, illness and spirits. The closing verses describe the results of reciting it once, twice and up to eleven times. The editions compared here print the opening frame differently; this page gives the text from Garuda's meditation onward, which all of them share.

How it is recited

It is recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti and in times of fear or illness, usually after the Hanuman Chalisa. The nyasa sections are performed by touching the fingers and body as each line is said. Some traditions ask that kavach texts be learned from a teacher; customs vary.
