Narayan Kavach ·

The "armour of Narayana", a prayer for protection from the Bhagavata Purana that calls on Vishnu's avatars, names and weapons to guard one everywhere and at every hour.

oṁ harirvidadhyānmama sarvarakṣāṃ nyastāṅghripadmaḥ patagendrapṛṣṭhe । darāricarmāsigadeṣucāpapāśāndadhāno'ṣṭaguṇo'ṣṭabāhuḥ ॥

Om. May Hari grant me every protection: he who rests his lotus feet on the back of Garuda, king of birds, eight-armed, with the eight powers, holding the conch, discus, shield, sword, mace, arrows, bow and noose.

jaleṣu māṃ rakṣatu matsyamūrtiryādogaṇebhyo varuṇasya pāśāt । sthaleṣu māyāvaṭuvāmano'vyāt trivikramaḥ khe'vatu viśvarūpaḥ ॥

In the waters may the Lord in the form of the Fish protect me from sea creatures and from the noose of Varuna; on land may Vamana, the dwarf of illusion, protect me; and in the sky Trivikrama, of universal form.

durgeṣvaṭavyājimukhādiṣu prabhuḥ pāyānnṛsiṃho'surayūthapāriḥ । vimuñcato yasya mahāṭṭahāsaṃ diśo vinedurnyapataṃśca garbhāḥ ॥

In hard places, in forests, at the front of battle and the like, may Lord Narasimha, enemy of the demon chiefs, protect me; at the sound of his great roar of laughter the directions echoed and wombs miscarried.

rakṣatvasau mādhvani yajñakalpaḥ svadaṃṣṭrayonnītadharo varāhaḥ । rāmo'drikūṭeṣvatha vipravāse salakṣmaṇo'vyādbharatāgrajo'smān ॥

On the road may Varaha, whose body is sacrifice, who lifted the earth on his tusk, protect me; on mountain peaks Parashurama; and in exile Rama, elder brother of Bharata, with Lakshmana.

māmugradharmādakhilātpramādānnārāyaṇaḥ pātu naraśca hāsāt । dattastvayogādatha yoganāthaḥ pāyādguṇeśaḥ kapilaḥ karmabandhāt ॥

May Narayana protect me from fierce, wrongful rites and from all carelessness, and Nara from pride; Dattatreya, lord of yoga, from failure in yoga; and Kapila, lord of the qualities, from the bondage of action.

sanatkumāro'vatu kāmadevāddhayaśīrṣā māṃ pathi devahelanāt । devarṣivaryaḥ puruṣārcanāntarāt kūrmo harirmāṃ nirayādaśeṣāt ॥

May Sanatkumara protect me from desire; Hayagriva on the road from offending the gods; Narada, best of divine sages, from faults in worship; and Hari as the Tortoise from every hell.

dhanvantarirbhagavānpātvapathyāddvandvādbhayādṛṣabho nirjitātmā । yajñaśca lokādavatājjanāntādbalo gaṇātkrodhavaśādahīndraḥ ॥

May Lord Dhanvantari protect me from unwholesome food; Rishabha, master of himself, from the fear of the pairs of opposites; Yajna from public blame; Balarama from death at the hands of men; and Shesha from the angry serpents.

dvaipāyano bhagavānaprabodhādbuddhastu pākhaṇḍagaṇapramādāt । kalkiḥ kaleḥ kālamalātprapātu dharmāvanāyorukṛtāvatāraḥ ॥

May Lord Dvaipayana Vyasa protect me from ignorance; the Buddha from the hosts of false teachers and from carelessness; and Kalki, who takes a great avatar to protect dharma, from the impurity of the Kali age.

māṃ keśavo gadayā prātaravyādgovinda āsaṅgavamāttaveṇuḥ । nārāyaṇaḥ prāhṇa udāttaśaktirmadhyandine viṣṇurarīndrapāṇiḥ ॥

May Keshava protect me with his mace at dawn; Govinda, holding his flute, in the early morning; Narayana, of lofty power, in the forenoon; and Vishnu, discus in hand, at midday.

devo'parāhne madhuhogradhanvā sāyaṃ tridhāmāvatu mādhavo mām । doṣe hṛṣīkeśa utārdharātre niśītha eko'vatu padmanābhaḥ ॥

May the Lord, slayer of Madhu, with his fierce bow, protect me in the afternoon; Madhava, of the three abodes, in the evening; Hrishikesha at nightfall and at midnight; and Padmanabha alone in the dead of night.

śrīvatsadhāmāpararātra īśaḥ pratyūṣa īśo'sidharo janārdanaḥ । dāmodaro'vyādanusandhyaṃ prabhāte viśveśvaro bhagavān kālamūrtiḥ ॥

May the Lord who bears the Shrivatsa protect me in the last part of the night; Janardana, sword in hand, at first light; Damodara at daybreak and every twilight; and Lord Vishveshvara, the form of time, at all times.

cakraṃ yugāntānalatigmanemi bhramatsamantādbhagavatprayuktam । dandagdhi dandagdhyarisainyamāśu kakṣaṃ yathā vātasakho hutāśaḥ ॥

O discus, sent forth by the Lord, your rim sharp as the fire at the end of the age, whirl all around and burn, burn the enemy armies at once, as fire, the friend of the wind, burns dry grass.

    gade'śanisparśanavisphuliṅge niṣpiṇḍhi niṣpiṇḍhyajitapriyāsi । kūṣmāṇḍavaināyakayakṣarakṣobhūtagrahāṃścūrṇaya cūrṇayārīn ॥

O mace, dear to the unconquered Lord, sending out sparks at your touch like a thunderbolt, crush, crush and grind to dust the Kushmandas, Vainayakas, yakshas, rakshasas, bhutas and grahas; grind my enemies to dust.

tvaṃ yātudhānapramathapretamātṛpiśācavipragrahaghoradṛṣṭīn । darendra vidrāvaya kṛṣṇapūrito bhīmasvano'rerhṛdayāni kampayan ॥

O best of conches, filled with Krishna's breath, sounding terribly, shaking the hearts of enemies, drive away the yatudhanas, pramathas, pretas, matrikas, pishachas, brahma-rakshasas and those with the evil eye.

tvaṃ tigmadhārāsivarārisainyamīśaprayukto mama chindhi chindhi । cakṣūṃṣi carmañchatacandra chādaya dviṣāmaghonāṃ hara pāpacakṣuṣām ॥

O best of swords, of sharp edge, sent by the Lord, cut, cut down the enemy armies; O shield marked with a hundred moons, cover the eyes of hostile sinners and take away the sight of the wicked.

yanno bhayaṃ grahebhyo'bhūtketubhyo nṛbhya eva ca । sarīsṛpebhyo daṃṣṭribhyo bhūtebhyoṃ'hobhya eva ca ॥

Whatever fear has come to us from the planets, from comets and from men, from creeping creatures, from fanged beasts, from spirits and from sins,

sarvāṇyetāni bhagavannāmarūpāstrakīrtanāt । prayāntu saṅkṣayaṃ sadyo ye naḥ śreyaḥpratīpakāḥ ॥

may all these, which stand against our welfare, be destroyed at once by the chanting of the Lord's names, forms and weapons.

garuḍo bhagavān stotrastobhaśchandomayaḥ prabhuḥ । rakṣatvaśeṣakṛcchrebhyo viṣvaksenaḥ svanāmabhiḥ ॥

May Lord Garuda, whose form is the Vedic chants, and Vishvaksena by his names, protect us from all hardships.

sarvāpadbhyo harernāmarūpayānāyudhāni naḥ । buddhīndriyamanaḥprāṇānpāntu pārṣadabhūṣaṇāḥ ॥

From every misfortune may Hari's names, forms, mount and weapons, and the ornaments of his attendants, protect our intellect, senses, mind and breath.

yathā hi bhagavāneva vastutaḥ sadasacca yat । satyenānena naḥ sarve yāntu nāśamupadravāḥ ॥

As the Lord alone truly is all that is, both seen and unseen, by this truth may all our troubles be destroyed.

yathaikātmyānubhāvānāṃ vikalparahitaḥ svayam । bhūṣaṇāyudhaliṅgākhyā dhatte śaktīḥ svamāyayā ॥

    एकत्व का अनुभव करने वालों के लिए वे स्वयं सब भेदों से रहित होकर भी अपनी माया से आभूषण, आयुध और चिह्न नाम की शक्तियाँ धारण करते हैं;

    For those who know oneness, he, himself free of all distinctions, holds by his own maya the powers called ornaments, weapons and marks;

tenaiva satyamānena sarvajño bhagavān hariḥ । pātu sarvaiḥ svarūpairnaḥ sadā sarvatra sarvagaḥ ॥

by that same truth, may the all-knowing Lord Hari, present everywhere, protect us always and everywhere with all his forms.

vidikṣu dikṣūrdhvamadhaḥ samantādantarbahirbhagavānnārasiṃhaḥ । prahāpayam̐llokabhayaṃ svanena svatejasā grastasamastatejāḥ ॥

In the corners and the four directions, above, below and all around, within and without, may Lord Narasimha protect us: he who drives away the world's fear with his roar, and whose splendour swallows every other light.

About this text

In the Bhagavata Purana the Narayan Kavach is taught by Vishvarupa to Indra, who wore this "armour" and defeated the asuras. The full rite begins with purification and the placing of the eight-syllable and twelve-syllable mantras on the body (nyasa); this page gives the prayer itself, verses 12 to 34 of the chapter. It asks Hari, seated on Garuda with his eight weapons, to protect one in water, on land and in the sky; then calls on each avatar for a particular danger, from the Fish in the waters and Narasimha in the wilderness to Kalki against the impurity of the Kali age; then asks his names, Keshava, Govinda, Narayana, Vishnu and the rest, to guard each watch of the day and night; then addresses the discus, mace, conch, sword and shield to drive away every harm. It closes by saying that because the Lord alone is all that is, by that truth may every trouble be destroyed, and asks Narasimha to protect in every direction.

How it is recited

It is recited for protection, often after bathing and facing north, and in the full rite after nyasa as the Bhagavata describes. Customs vary.
