Hanuman Chalisa: Meaning

The Hanuman Chalisa, traditionally attributed to Tulsidas, has forty chaupais framed by two opening dohas and one closing doha. It praises Hanuman's form and qualities, recalls his deeds in the Ramayana, describes the protection he gives, and ends with the benefits of recitation. The notes below explain each verse in plain terms, with key Awadhi words glossed; interpretive notes are marked where traditions differ.

मनु मुकुरुmanu mukuruthe mirror of the mind
    बिमल जसुbimala jasuspotless glory
फल चारिphala cārithe four fruits (aims of life)

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of my guru's lotus feet, I describe the pure glory of Shri Raghubar (Ram), which grants the four fruits of life.

Tulsidas begins by cleaning the mirror of his mind with the dust of his guru's lotus feet. In Indian tradition the mind is a mirror that collects dust (impressions and ego); humility before the teacher clears it, so that Ram's pure glory can be reflected and described. That glory grants the four aims of life: dharma, wealth, fulfilment of right desire, and liberation.

Knowing myself to be lacking in understanding, I remember you, son of the Wind. Grant me strength, wisdom and knowledge, and take away my troubles and faults.

Calling himself lacking in understanding, the poet remembers the son of the Wind and asks for three gifts (strength, intelligence and knowledge) and for the removal of suffering and inner impurities. The humility is deliberate: the prayer opens the way for grace rather than relying on one's own ability.
