About this text
This chalisa, distinct from the Shri Lakshmi Chalisa, praises Mahalakshmi as the primal power, Bhavani, who sustains the world. It pictures her seated on a white lotus in white garments and ornaments, with a royal umbrella, a pearl necklace, curling hair and four arms like lotus stalks, and says she created the world from the five elements, with every living being, tree, fruit and flower. It says she can turn a king into a pauper in a moment, and that her favour makes a person blessed. Its prayers use the seed syllables Om Shrim for joy, Om Hrim to remove illness and Om Klim to destroy enemies, and ask her to come without delay, dwell in the heart and fulfil the devotee's hopes. In a few lines the editions differ; the reading of the most-visited site is shown and all readings are listed.
