Kanakadhara Stotram ·

Adi Shankaracharya's hymn to Lakshmi, asking her gracious glance to fall like a shower of gold on the poor.

aṅgaṃ hareḥ pulakabhūṣaṇamāśrayantī bhṛṅgāṅganeva mukulābharaṇaṃ tamālam । aṅgīkṛtākhilavibhūtirapāṅgalīlā māṅgalyadāstu mama maṅgaladevatāyāḥ ॥

As a female bee rests on the budding tamala tree, so the playful side-glance of Lakshmi rests on Hari's body, which thrills with joy; may that glance of the goddess of auspiciousness, which holds all prosperity, bring me good fortune.

mugdhā muhurvidadhatī vadane murāreḥ prematrapāpraṇihitāni gatāgatāni । mālā dṛśormadhukarīva mahotpale yā sā me śriyaṃ diśatu sāgarasambhavāyāḥ ॥

Like a bee that hovers again and again over a great blue lotus, her glance, full of love and shyness, comes and goes on the face of Murari; may that garland of glances of the ocean-born goddess grant me fortune.

    viśvāmarendrapadavibhramadānadakṣamānandaheturadhikaṃ muravidviṣo'pi । īṣanniṣīdatu mayi kṣaṇamīkṣaṇārdhamindīvarodarasahodaramindirāyāḥ ॥

Her glance, able to grant even the rank of Indra, lord of the gods, and a source of great joy even to Vishnu, the enemy of Mura: may half a glance of Indira, lovely as the inside of a blue lotus, rest on me for a moment.

āmīlitākṣamadhigamya mudā mukundamānandakandamanimeṣamanaṅgatantram । ākekarasthitakanīnikapakṣmanetraṃ bhūtyai bhavenmama bhujaṅgaśayāṅganāyāḥ ॥

Her eyes, half-closed in joy at reaching Mukunda, the root of bliss, gazing unblinking, under love's spell, with pupils and lashes resting at their corners: may the eyes of the beloved of the serpent-reclining Lord bring me prosperity.

bāhvantare madhujitaḥ śritakaustubhe yā hārāvalīva harinīlamayī vibhāti । kāmapradā bhagavato'pi kaṭākṣamālā kalyāṇamāvahatu me kamalālayāyāḥ ॥

Her garland of glances, which shines like a necklace of sapphires on the chest of Madhu's slayer where the Kaustubha gem rests, and which grants the desires even of the Lord: may it bring me good fortune, she who dwells in the lotus.

kālāmbudālilalitorasi kaiṭabhārerdhārādhare sphurati yā taṭidaṅganeva । mātussamastajagatāṃ mahanīyamūrtiḥ bhadrāṇi me diśatu bhārgavanandanāyāḥ ॥

Like lightning flashing on a dark rain cloud, she shines on the chest of Kaitabha's enemy, lovely as a bank of dark clouds; may the revered form of the mother of all worlds, daughter of Bhrigu, grant me blessings.

prāptaṃ padaṃ prathamataḥ khalu yatprabhāvānmāṅgalyabhāji madhumāthini manmathena । mayyāpatettadiha mantharamīkṣaṇārdhaṃ mandālasaṃ ca makarālayakanyakāyāḥ ॥

By whose power Kamadeva first gained his place in Vishnu, the auspicious slayer of Madhu: may that slow, gentle half-glance of the daughter of the ocean fall on me here.

dadyāddayānupavano draviṇāmbudhārāmasminnakiñcanavihaṅgaśiśau viṣaṇṇe । duṣkarmagharmamapanīya cirāya dūraṃ nārāyaṇapraṇayinīnayanāmbuvāhaḥ ॥

May the rain cloud of the eyes of Narayana's beloved, driven by the wind of compassion, pour a stream of wealth on this destitute fledgling of a bird, in distress, and drive the scorching heat of my bad deeds far away for ever.

iṣṭāviśiṣṭamatayo'pi yayā dayārdradṛṣṭyā triviṣṭapapadaṃ sulabhaṃ labhante । dṛṣṭiḥ prahṛṣṭakamalodaradīptiriṣṭāṃ puṣṭiṃ kṛṣīṣṭa mama puṣkaraviṣṭarāyāḥ ॥

By whose compassionate glance even those of little merit easily attain the realm of heaven: may the glance of the lotus-seated goddess, radiant as the inside of a blooming lotus, grant me the nourishment I desire.

gīrdevateti garuḍadhvajasundarīti śākambharīti śaśiśekharavallabheti । sṛṣṭisthitipralayakeliṣu saṃsthitāyai tasyai namastribhuvanaikagurostaruṇyai ॥

As the goddess of speech, as the beauty of the one with Garuda on his banner, as Shakambhari, as the beloved of the moon-crested one, she abides in the play of creation, preservation and dissolution: salutations to her, the young consort of the one teacher of the three worlds.

Salutations to her as the Veda, who brings forth the fruit of good deeds; salutations to her as Rati, an ocean of lovely qualities; salutations to her as Shakti, who dwells in the hundred-petalled lotus; salutations to her as Pushti, beloved of the supreme person.

    namo'stu nālīkanibhānanāyai namo'stu dugdhodadhijanmabhūmyai । namo'stu somāmṛtasodarāyai namo'stu nārāyaṇavallabhāyai ॥

Salutations to her as radiance, the lotus-eyed; salutations to her as prosperity, mother of the worlds; salutations to her who is worshipped by the gods and others; salutations to the beloved of Nanda's son.

Lotus-eyed one, may salutations to you, which bring wealth, delight all the senses, give the splendour of sovereignty and are eager to take away sins, always be mine alone, revered Mother.

At dawn I bow to the mother of the worlds, whose body is bathed by the elephants of the directions with the pure, lovely water of the heavenly river poured from golden pots: the consort of the lord of all the worlds, daughter of the ocean of nectar.

kamale kamalākṣavallabhe tvaṃ karuṇāpūrataraṅgitairapāṅgaiḥ । avalokaya māmakiñcanānāṃ prathamaṃ pātramakṛtrimaṃ dayāyāḥ ॥

Kamala, beloved of the lotus-eyed one, look upon me with side-glances rippling with the flood of compassion: I am the first and most fitting recipient of your mercy among the destitute.

stuvanti ye stutibhiramūbhiranvahaṃ trayīmayīṃ tribhuvanamātaraṃ ramām । guṇādhikā gurutarabhāgyabhāgino bhavanti te bhuvi budhabhāvitāśayāḥ ॥

Those who daily praise Rama (Lakshmi), the embodiment of the three Vedas and mother of the three worlds, with these hymns become rich in virtues, share in great fortune, and are honoured by the wise on earth.

About this text

The Kanakadhara Stotram ("stream of gold") is a Sanskrit hymn to Lakshmi traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Legend says that as a young boy, begging for alms, he was given a single dried amla fruit by a poor woman who had nothing else; moved, he sang this hymn, and Lakshmi showered her house with golden fruit. Most verses dwell on Lakshmi's glance resting on Vishnu and ask that it turn, even for a moment, to the devotee; later verses salute her by many names.

Editions differ in the order of the third verse and in a few additional verses; the order and verses most sources share are given here, and the reasons for each choice are recorded.

How it is recited

It is commonly recited on Fridays, on Akshaya Tritiya and Diwali, and by those praying for relief from poverty. Practices vary.
