Lakshmi Mantras ·

Three widely chanted prayers to Lakshmi: the Lakshmi Gayatri, the Lakshmi verse of the Devi hymn, and the Mahalakshmi mantra.

oṁ mahālakṣmyai ca vidmahe viṣṇupatnyai ca dhīmahi tanno lakṣmīḥ pracodayāt ॥

Lakshmi Gayatri: Om. May we know Mahalakshmi; may we meditate on the consort of Vishnu; may Lakshmi inspire us.

yā devī sarvabhūteṣu lakṣmīrūpeṇa saṃsthitā । namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ ॥

To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Lakshmi (prosperity): salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation to her, salutation again and again.

oṁ śrīṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ kamale kamalālaye prasīda prasīda oṁ śrīṃ hrīṃ śrīṃ mahālakṣmyai namaḥ ॥

Om shrim hrim shrim (seed syllables). O Kamala, you who dwell in the lotus, be gracious, be gracious. Om shrim hrim shrim, salutation to Mahalakshmi.

About this text

This page gathers three short prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and good fortune. The Lakshmi Gayatri follows the pattern of the Gayatri mantra and asks Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, to inspire our understanding; some editions add Shri at the start or Om at the end. Ya devi sarva-bhuteshu lakshmi-rupena is the verse of the Devi Mahatmya that bows to the Goddess dwelling in all beings as prosperity. The Mahalakshmi mantra combines the seed syllables shrim and hrim with a plea to her, the lotus-dweller, to be gracious. Each prayer has been compared separately against independent editions.

How it is recited

These are chanted in Lakshmi worship, especially on Fridays, on Diwali night and on Sharad Purnima, often 108 times on a mala. Customs vary.
