Kanakadhara Stotram: Meaning
The Kanakadhara Stotram ("stream of gold") is a Sanskrit hymn to Lakshmi attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Tradition tells that the young Shankara, begging for alms, came to the house of a very poor woman who had only a dried amla fruit to give; moved, he sang this hymn, and Lakshmi showered golden amlas on the house. Most verses dwell on Lakshmi's glance resting on Vishnu and ask that it fall on the poet; later verses are salutations and a closing phalashruti. The notes give the plain sense of each verse.

As a female bee rests on the budding tamala tree, so the playful side-glance of Lakshmi rests on Hari's body, which thrills with joy; may that glance of the goddess of auspiciousness, which holds all prosperity, bring me good fortune.
May the playful sidelong glance of Lakshmi, the goddess of auspiciousness, bring me good fortune: the glance that rests on Hari's body, which thrills with joy, as a female bee rests on a tamala tree adorned with buds; the glance that holds all prosperity.

Like a bee that hovers again and again over a great blue lotus, her glance, full of love and shyness, comes and goes on the face of Murari; may that garland of glances of the ocean-born goddess grant me fortune.
May the garland of glances of the ocean-born (Lakshmi) grant me wealth: the glances that, charmed, keep going to and fro on Murari's face, held back by love and shyness, like a bee hovering over a great lotus.
