About this text

The Navagraha Stotra salutes the nine grahas of Hindu astrology, one verse each, in the order of the weekdays followed by the two shadow planets: Surya the Sun, Chandra the Moon, Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu and Ketu. Each verse gives the graha's colour and a few marks of identity: the Sun red as the hibiscus flower, the Moon white as curd and conch, Mars born of the Earth, Jupiter guru of the gods, Venus guru of the daityas, Saturn son of the Sun and Chhaya, Rahu half-bodied, Ketu red as the palasha flower. The closing verse calls it a hymn sung by Vyasa and says that reciting it with a collected mind, by day or night, calms obstacles.

How it is recited

It is recited daily by many, at the start of a puja, and in Navagraha shanti rites; the single verse for a graha is also recited on its weekday. Customs vary.
