vaikuṇṭhe ca mahālakṣmīrlakṣmīḥ kṣīrodasāgare । svargalakṣmīrindragehe rājalakṣmīrnṛpālaye ॥
In Vaikuntha you are Mahalakshmi, in the ocean of milk Lakshmi; in Indra's palace Svarga-Lakshmi, in the king's palace Raja-Lakshmi.

In the homes of householders you are Griha-Lakshmi, the deity of the house; you are Surabhi, mother of cows, and Dakshina, beloved of the sacrifice.
aditirdevamātā tvaṃ kamalā kamalālaye । svāhā tvaṃ ca havirdāne kavyadāne svadhā smṛtā ॥
You are Aditi, mother of the gods, and Kamala in the lotus-home; you are Svaha in offerings to the gods, and are known as Svadha in offerings to the ancestors.
tvaṃ hi viṣṇusvarūpā ca sarvādhārā vasundharā । śuddhasattvasvarūpā tvaṃ nārāyaṇaparāyaṇā ॥
You are of the very nature of Vishnu, the support of all, the earth; you are pure sattva, wholly devoted to Narayana.
krodhahiṃsāvarjitā ca varadā ca śubhānanā । paramārthapradā tvaṃ ca haridāsyapradā parā ॥
Free of anger and violence, giver of boons, of auspicious face; you grant the highest goal, and the supreme gift of service to Hari.
yayā vinā jagatsarvaṃ bhasmībhūtamasārakam । jīvanmṛtaṃ ca viśvaṃ ca śavatulyaṃ yayā vinā ॥
Without you the whole world is ash and worthless; without you the universe is living yet dead, like a corpse.
sarveṣāṃ ca parā tvaṃ hi sarvabāndhavarūpiṇī । yayā vinā na sambhāṣyo bāndhavairbāndhavaḥ sadā ॥
You are the highest of all, present in every kinsman; without you, a person is not even spoken to by their own kin.
tvayā hīno bandhuhīnastvayā yuktaḥ sabāndhavaḥ । dharmārthakāmamokṣāṇāṃ tvaṃ ca kāraṇarūpiṇī ॥
Without you one is without kin; with you one has kin. You are the cause of dharma, artha, kama and moksha.
yathā mātā stanandhānāṃ śiśūnāṃ śaiśave sadā । tathā tvaṃ sarvadā mātā sarveṣāṃ sarvarūpataḥ ॥
As a mother is always to children at the breast in their infancy, so are you always the mother of all, in every form.
A child without its mother, weaned from the breast, may yet survive by fate; but no one at all can live without you: this is certain.
suprasannasvarūpā tvaṃ me prasannā bhavāmbike । vairigrastaṃ ca viṣayaṃ dehi mahyaṃ sanātani ॥
You whose nature is grace, be pleased with me, Mother; eternal one, give back to me my realm, seized by enemies.
vayaṃ yāvattvayā hīnā bandhuhīnāśca bhikṣukāḥ । sarvasampadvihīnāśca tāvadeva haripriye ॥
As long as we are without you, we are without kin, beggars, bereft of all wealth, beloved of Hari.
rājyaṃ dehi śriyaṃ dehi balaṃ dehi sureśvari । kīrtiṃ dehi dhanaṃ dehi yaśo mahyaṃ ca dehi vai ॥
Give a kingdom, give prosperity, give strength, queen of the gods; give renown, give wealth, and give me glory.
kāmaṃ dehi matiṃ dehi bhogāndehi haripriye । jñānaṃ dehi ca dharmaṃ ca sarvasaubhāgyamīpsitam ॥
Give fulfilment, give understanding, give enjoyments, beloved of Hari; give knowledge and dharma, and all the good fortune I seek.
prabhāvaṃ ca pratāpaṃ ca sarvādhikārameva ca । jayaṃ parākramaṃ yuddhe paramaiśvaryameva ca ॥
Give influence and majesty, and authority over all; victory and valour in battle, and supreme sovereignty.
About this text
In the Prakriti Khanda of the Brahmavaivarta Purana, Indra, having lost his kingdom and the fortune of the gods, worships Mahalakshmi and sings this hymn to win her back. It first salutes her by name: she who dwells in the lotus, Narayani, Krishna's beloved, Padma, Vaishnavi, the giver of wealth, joy, liberation and devotion to Hari. It then names the forms she takes everywhere: Mahalakshmi in Vaikuntha, Svarga-Lakshmi in Indra's heaven, Raja-Lakshmi in palaces, Griha-Lakshmi in every home, Surabhi among cows, Svaha and Svadha in offerings. Without her, it says, the world is ash and a person has no kin; and it ends with Indra asking her to give back his realm and to grant wealth, fame, knowledge, dharma and victory. This page is not the shorter Mahalakshmi Ashtakam ("Namaste'stu Mahamaye"), which is also attributed to Indra.
