Keelak Stotram ·

The Keelak, recited before the Durga Saptashati, which tells how Shiva "locked" the Saptashati and how its seal is opened.

oṁ viśuddhajñānadehāya trivedīdivyacakṣuṣe । śreyaḥprāptinimittāya namaḥ somārdhadhāriṇe ॥

Om. Salutations to him whose body is pure knowledge, whose divine eyes are the three Vedas, who is the means of attaining the highest good, and who wears the half-moon.

    sarvametadvijānīyānmantrāṇāmabhikīlakam । so'pi kṣemamavāpnoti satataṃ jāpyatatparaḥ ॥

One should know all this as the keelak that seals the mantras; whoever is ever devoted to reciting it also attains well-being.

siddhyantyuccāṭanādīni karmāṇi sakalānyapi । etena stuvatāṃ devī stotramātreṇa siddhyati ॥

For those who praise the Goddess with this, all rites, even those like uchchatana, succeed; she is won by the stotra alone.

na mantro nauṣadhaṃ tatra na kiñcidapi vidyate । vinā jāpyena siddhyeta sarvamuccāṭanādikam ॥

No mantra, no herb, nothing else at all is needed for it; without any other japa, every rite such as uchchatana succeeds.

samagrāṇyapi setsyanti lokaśaṅkāmimāṃ haraḥ । kṛtvā nimantrayāmāsa sarvamevamidaṃ śubham ॥

Seeing that people might doubt that everything would succeed so easily, Hara (Shiva) sealed this whole auspicious text.

stotraṃ vai caṇḍikāyāstu tacca guptaṃ cakāra saḥ । samāpnoti sa puṇyena tāṃ yathāvannimantraṇām ॥

He kept this stotra of Chandika hidden; through merit one attains its proper unsealing.

so'pi kṣemamavāpnoti sarvameva na saṃśayaḥ । kṛṣṇāyāṃ vā caturdaśyāmaṣṭamyāṃ vā samāhitaḥ ॥

That person too attains well-being in every way, without doubt, who with a collected mind, on the fourteenth or the eighth day of the dark fortnight,

dadāti pratigṛhṇāti nānyathaiṣā prasīdati । itthaṃ rūpeṇa kīlena mahādevena kīlitam ॥

gives everything to the Goddess and receives it back as her grace; otherwise she is not pleased. In this way Mahadeva sealed it with a pin.

yo niṣkīlāṃ vidhāyaināṃ nityaṃ japati saṃsphuṭam । sa siddhaḥ sa gaṇaḥ so'pi gandharvo jāyate naraḥ ॥

Whoever unseals it and recites it daily and clearly becomes a siddha, an attendant of Shiva, even a gandharva.

na caivāpyaṭatastasya bhayaṃ kvāpīha jāyate । nāpamṛtyuvaśaṃ yāti mṛto mokṣamavāpnuyāt ॥

Wherever they go, no fear arises for them anywhere; they do not fall prey to untimely death, and at death they attain liberation.

jñātvā prārabhya kurvīta na kurvāṇo vinaśyati । tato jñātvaiva sampannamidaṃ prārabhyate budhaiḥ ॥

Knowing this, one should begin and then perform it; one who performs it without knowing comes to ruin. So the wise begin it only after knowing it fully.

saubhāgyādi ca yatkiñcid dṛśyate lalanājane । tatsarvaṃ tatprasādena tena japyamidaṃ śubham ॥

Whatever good fortune and the like is seen among women comes from her grace; so this auspicious stotra should be recited.

śanaistu japyamāne'smin stotre sampattiruccakaiḥ । bhavatyeva samagrāpi tataḥ prārabhyameva tat ॥

When this stotra is recited softly, great and complete prosperity surely comes; therefore it should certainly be begun.

aiśvaryaṃ tatprasādena saubhāgyārogyameva ca । śatruhāniḥparo mokṣaḥ stūyate sā na kiṃ janaiḥ ॥

By her grace come sovereignty, good fortune and health, the destruction of enemies and the highest liberation; why should people not praise her?

About this text

Keelak means a pin or bolt. This short stotra, recited before the Durga Saptashati after the Devi Kavach and the Argala, tells that because the Saptashati brings success so easily, Shiva sealed it, so that its fruit comes only to those who recite it in the right way, with devotion and by offering themselves to the Goddess. It says that whoever recites the Saptashati after this unsealing is freed from fear and untimely death and gains good fortune, health and finally liberation. The verses are terse and have been read in more than one way; the meanings given here are plain renderings. Two versions of the text circulate; this page gives the one printed with the common North Indian editions of the Durga Saptashati.
