About this text

Brihaspati, the guru of the gods and the planet Jupiter, is worshipped on Thursdays. This aarti offers him bananas and dried fruit and addresses him as the complete Supreme Self, the father and master of the world. It says his charanamrit takes away every sin, that he comes and stands at the door of whoever surrenders body, mind and wealth to him, and that he breaks the bonds of worldly life and clears away doubt. The last line promises the reward of singing it with love; editions word its second half differently, and the readings are listed below the text. The opening couplet is sung as a refrain.

How it is recited

It is sung on Thursdays after the Brihaspati vrat katha, with yellow flowers, gram dal, jaggery and bananas offered. Customs vary.
