About this text
Rahu is one of the nine grahas of Hindu astrology, a shadow planet without a body of its own. In the Puranic story, the asura Svarbhanu, son of Simhika, slipped among the gods to drink the nectar of immortality; the Sun and Moon exposed him, and Vishnu cut off his head with the Sudarshana chakra. The head, now immortal, became Rahu, which is why he is said to swallow the Sun and Moon at eclipses. This stotra, which its editions attribute to the Skanda Purana, gathers twenty-five of his names, among them Svarbhanu, Saimhikeya (son of Simhika), Vidhuntuda (tormentor of the Moon) and Ardhakaya (the half-bodied), and closes by saying that whoever recites it is freed from great affliction.
How it is recited
It is recited for relief during Rahu's dasha or when Rahu is weak in a horoscope, often on Saturdays or during Rahu kaal. Customs vary.
