Shri Ram Stuti (Shri Ramchandra Kripalu) ·

Tulsidas's hymn to Ram in Sanskritised Awadhi, describing his beauty and asking him to dwell in the heart.

śrī rāmacandra kṛpālu bhajumana haraṇa bhavabhaya dāruṇaṃ । nava kaṃja locana kaṃja mukha kara kaṃja pada kaṃjāruṇaṃ । kandarpa agaṇita amita chavi nava nīla nīrada sundaraṃ । paṭa pīta mānahuṃ taṙita ruci śuci naumi janaka sutāvaraṃ ॥

O mind, worship the compassionate Shri Ramchandra, who removes the terrible fear of worldly existence; his eyes, face, hands and feet are like fresh lotuses, red as lotuses. His beauty surpasses countless Kamadevas; he is lovely as a fresh dark rain cloud; his yellow garment shines like lightning. I bow to the pure groom of Janaka's daughter.

bhaju dīnabandhu dineśa dānava daitya vaṃśa nikandanaṃ । raghunanda ānanda kanda kośala canda daśaratha nandanaṃ । sira mukuṭa kuṃḍala tilaka cāru udāru aṃga vibhūṣaṇaṃ । ājānu bhuja śara cāpa dhara saṃgrāma jita kharadūṣaṇaṃ ॥

Worship the friend of the humble, sun (of Raghu's line), destroyer of the race of demons; the joy of Raghu's line, root of bliss, moon of Kosala, son of Dasharath. A crown on his head, earrings, a lovely tilak, and fine ornaments on every limb; his arms reach to his knees, he holds bow and arrow, and he conquered Khara and Dushana in battle.

iti vadati tulasīdāsa śaṃkara śeṣa muni mana raṃjanaṃ । mama hṛdaya kaṃja nivāsa kuru kāmādi khala dala gaṃjanaṃ ॥

So says Tulsidas: you who delight the minds of Shankar, Shesha and the sages, make your home in the lotus of my heart, destroyer of the hosts of the wicked such as desire.

manu jāhiṃ rāceu milihi so baru sahaja suṃdara sāṃvaro । karuṇā nidhāna sujāna śīla saneha jānata rāvaro । ehi bhāṃti gaurī asīsa suna siya sahita hiya haraṣita alī । tulasī bhavānihi pūjī puni-puni mudita mana mandira calī ॥

(Gauri's blessing to Sita:) "The groom your heart has fallen for, naturally handsome and dark, will be yours; he is a treasury of compassion and all-knowing, and he knows your nature and your love." Hearing Gauri's blessing in this way, Sita and her companions were glad at heart; says Tulsi, having worshipped Bhavani again and again, she went to the palace with a joyful mind.

Knowing Gauri to be favourable, Sita's joy could not be described; her left limbs, the root of all lovely auspiciousness, began to throb (a good omen).

About this text

Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaju Man is a hymn by Tulsidas from the Vinaya Patrika (pada 45), written in a highly Sanskritised Awadhi. It describes Ram's lotus eyes, face, hands and feet, his beauty surpassing countless Kamadevas, his yellow garment like lightning against a dark rain cloud, and his victory over Khara and Dushana, and asks him to dwell in the poet's heart. As commonly sung, it is followed by a chhand and soratha from the Ramcharitmanas (Balakanda), in which Gauri blesses Sita that she will marry the dark, handsome groom her heart has chosen.

How it is recited

It is sung in Ram worship, on Ram Navami, at Ramayan readings and in evening prayers, often before or after the aarti. Customs vary.
