The Vedic hymn invoking Shri (Lakshmi), golden and radiant, to bring prosperity and drive away misfortune.

hiraṇyavarṇāṃ hariṇīṃ suvarṇarajatasrajām । candrāṃ hiraṇmayīṃ lakṣmīṃ jātavedo ma āvaha ॥

O Jatavedas (Agni), bring to me Lakshmi, golden in colour, the doe-like one, wearing garlands of gold and silver, the moon-like, golden goddess.

tāṃ ma āvaha jātavedo lakṣmīmanapagāminīm । yasyāṃ hiraṇyaṃ vindeyaṃ gāmaśvaṃ puruṣānaham ॥

O Jatavedas, bring me that Lakshmi who never departs, through whom I may obtain gold, cattle, horses and people.

aśvapūrvāṃ rathamadhyāṃ hastinādaprabodhinīm । śriyaṃ devīmupahvaye śrīrmā devī juṣatām ॥

I invoke the goddess Shri, preceded by horses, with chariots in her midst, awakened by the trumpeting of elephants; may the goddess Shri delight in me.

kāṃ sosmitāṃ hiraṇyaprākārāmārdrāṃ jvalantīṃ tṛptāṃ tarpayantīm । padme sthitāṃ padmavarṇāṃ tāmihopahvaye śriyam ॥

I invoke here that Shri who is beyond description, gently smiling, surrounded by gold, moist (with compassion), radiant, content and giving contentment, standing on the lotus, lotus-coloured.

candrāṃ prabhāsāṃ yaśasā jvalantīṃ śriyaṃ loke devajuṣṭāmudārām । tāṃ padminīmīṃ śaraṇamahaṃ prapadye'lakṣmīrme naśyatāṃ tvāṃ vṛṇe ॥

I take refuge in that Shri, moon-like, radiant, blazing with glory, served by the gods in the world, generous, holding the lotus; may misfortune be destroyed for me: I choose you.

ādityavarṇe tapaso'dhijāto vanaspatistava vṛkṣo'tha bilvaḥ । tasya phalāni tapasā nudantu māyāntarāyāśca bāhyā alakṣmīḥ ॥

Sun-coloured one, from your austerity was born the bilva, king of trees; may its fruits, by that austerity, drive away the misfortunes within and without.

upaitu māṃ devasakhaḥ kīrtiśca maṇinā saha । prādurbhūto'smi rāṣṭre'smin kīrtimṛddhiṃ dadātu me ॥

May the friend of the gods (Kubera) and fame come to me with the jewel; I am born in this land: may he grant me fame and prosperity.

kṣutpipāsāmalāṃ jyeṣṭhāmalakṣmīṃ nāśayāmyaham । abhūtimasamṛddhiṃ ca sarvāṃ nirṇuda me gṛhāt ॥

I destroy Alakshmi, the elder sister of misfortune, marked by hunger, thirst and impurity; drive out from my home all lack of wealth and of prosperity.

manasaḥ kāmamākūtiṃ vācaḥ satyamaśīmahi । paśūnāṃ rūpamannasya mayi śrīḥ śrayatāṃ yaśaḥ ॥

May we obtain the wishes and intentions of the mind and truth of speech; may Shri, the beauty of cattle and of food, and fame dwell in me.

kardamena prajābhūtā mayi sambhava kardama । śriyaṃ vāsaya me kule mātaraṃ padmamālinīm ॥

Kardama, through whom (Shri) has offspring, be born in me; settle in my family Shri, the mother, wearing a garland of lotuses.

O Jatavedas, bring me that Lakshmi who never departs, through whom I may obtain abundant gold, cattle, servants, horses and people.

About this text

The Shri Suktam is a Vedic hymn to Shri, the goddess of fortune identified with Lakshmi, preserved in the khila (appendix) of the Rigveda. The worshipper asks Jatavedas (Agni) to bring the golden, radiant goddess who never departs, who is heralded by horses and the trumpeting of elephants, and who sits on the lotus; it asks her to drive away Alakshmi (misfortune), hunger and thirst, and to dwell in the household. Kardama and Chiklita, called her sons, are asked to settle her there. The last verse says it should be recited by one who desires prosperity, with offerings into the fire.

In Vedic recitation it carries accent marks, which are not shown on this page; the sixteen verses most sources share are given.

How it is recited

It is recited in Lakshmi worship, especially on Fridays and Diwali, and with offerings in homa. Formal Vedic chanting with accents is learned from a teacher; practices vary.
