About this text

The Aditya Hridayam, "the heart of Aditya", is a passage of the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. Ram stands on the battlefield worn out and anxious, with Ravana ready to fight, when the sage Agastya, who has come with the gods to watch, teaches him this hymn to the Sun. Its first verses tell the scene and praise the hymn; the middle verses name the Sun as all the gods and powers, from Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to the seasons and the breath of living beings, and salute him by many names; the last verses tell how Ram recited it three times, took up his bow and went into battle, and how the Sun, among the gods, told him to make haste. Editions number this chapter differently. Two versions of the text circulate that differ in a few words; this page follows the one found in the popular printed editions.
