(The Devi says:) Whoever recites this garland of my names, of me, Durga, will be freed from every fear; of this there is no doubt.

About this text
The Durga Dvatrimshan Namamala (garland of thirty-two names) is a short Sanskrit hymn printed with the Durga Saptashati. Every name plays on the word durga, which means both "difficult, hard to reach" and "fortress": she is the one who removes difficulties, protects in hardship, destroys the demon Durgama, gives knowledge that is hard to attain, and is herself hard to approach. In the tradition that accompanies it, Durga gives these names to the gods as a protection against all calamities. The editions add a closing verse saying that whoever recites the names is freed from all fear; because the editions compared here word its first line differently, this page gives the thirty-two names only.
How it is recited
It is often recited after the Durga Saptashati or on its own during Navratri and in times of difficulty, sometimes 108 times. Customs vary.
