About this text
This aarti is offered not to a deity but to the Ramayana, the story of Rama, "lovely with the fame of Sita's beloved". It lists those who sing it: Brahma, Narada, Valmiki, Shuka, the Sanaka brothers, Shesha, Sharada, Shiva and Parvati, the sage Agastya, Vyasa, and the crow-sage Kakabhushundi who told it to Garuda. It calls the story the essence of the Vedas, the eighteen Puranas and the six shastras, and ends by saying it washes away the filth of the Kali age, is the herb that cures the disease of worldly life, and is father and mother in every way to Tulsi, the poet Tulsidas. The opening couplet is sung as a refrain.
