Shitala Mata Aarti ·

The aarti "Jai Shitala Mata", sung to the goddess Shitala, who is prayed to for protection from disease, on Shitala Ashtami (Basoda).

jaya śītalā mātā maiyā jaya śītalā mātā । ādi jyoti mahārānī saba phala kī dātā ॥

Glory to Mother Shitala, O Mother, glory to Mother Shitala; primal light, great queen, giver of every reward.

ratana siṃhāsana śobhita śveta chatra bhātā । ṛddhi-siddhi cam̐vara ḍolāveṃ jagamaga chavi chātā ॥

You shine on a jewelled throne under a lovely white umbrella; Riddhi and Siddhi wave whisks and your radiance spreads dazzling all around.

viṣṇu sevata ṭhāṙhe seveṃ śiva dhātā । veda purāṇa varaṇata pāra nahīṃ pātā ॥

Vishnu stands waiting on you, and Shiva and Brahma serve you; the Vedas and Puranas describe you but cannot reach your end.

indra mṛdaṅga bajāvata candra vīṇā hāthā । sūraja tāla bajāvai nārada muni gātā ॥

Indra plays the mridanga and Chandra holds the vina; Surya keeps the rhythm and the sage Narada sings.

ghaṇṭā śaṅkha śahanāī bājai mana bhātā । karai bhakta jana āratī lakhi lakhi harṣātā ॥

Bells, conch and shehnai sound, pleasing the heart; devotees perform the aarti and rejoice as they gaze on you.

brahma rūpa varadānī tuhī tīna kāla jñātā । bhaktana ko sukha detī mātu pitā bhrātā ॥

In the form of Brahman you grant boons; you alone know the three times. You give joy to your devotees and are their mother, father and brother.

jo jana dhyāna lagāve prema śakti pātā । sakala manoratha pāve bhavanidhi tara jātā ॥

Whoever meditates on you with love gains strength; they obtain every wish and cross the ocean of worldly life.

rogoṃ se jo pīṙita koī śaraṇa terī ātā । koṙhī pāve nirmala kāyā andha netra pātā ॥

Whoever suffers from disease and comes to your refuge, the leper gains a clean body and the blind gain sight.

bāṃjha putra ko pāve dāridra kaṭa jātā । tāko bhajai jo nāhīṃ sira dhuni pachatātā ॥

The childless woman gains a son and poverty is cut away; whoever does not worship her beats their head in regret.

śītala karatī jananī tū hī hai jaga trātā । utpatti bālā bināśana tū saba kī mātā ॥

Mother, you bring coolness; you are the protector of the world. You are origin, maiden and destruction; you are the mother of all. (Other editions read "you are the destroyer of disease" here; the readings are listed below.)

    Editions differ: «उत्पत्ति बाला बिनाशन तू सब की माता» (drikpanchang, instaastro); «उत्पत्ति व्याधि बिनाशन तू सब की घाता» (bhaktibharat, hindunidhi); «उत्पत्ति व्याधि विनाशत तू सब की घाता» (bharatdiscovery). The reading shown is that of the most-visited of these sites (Tranco ranking, see the editorial policy).

dāsa vicitra kara joṙe suna merī mātā । bhakti āpanī dījai aura na kucha bhātā ॥

Your servant Vichitra, with folded hands, says: hear me, Mother; give me devotion to you, nothing else pleases me.

About this text

Shitala, "the cooling one", is worshipped in north India for protection from fever, pox and other illness, especially on Shitala Ashtami after Holi, when food cooked the day before is offered. This aarti calls her the primal light and great queen who gives every reward, pictures her on a jewelled throne under a white umbrella with Riddhi and Siddhi waving whisks, and has Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, Indra, Chandra, Surya and Narada serving and making music for her. It says she heals the sick, gives sight to the blind and children to the childless, and ends with the poet, the servant Vichitra, asking only for devotion. In one line the editions differ; the reading of the most-visited site is shown and all readings are listed. The opening couplet is sung as a refrain.

How it is recited

It is sung on Shitala Ashtami (Basoda) and Shitala Saptami, after the cold offering, and in prayers for recovery from illness. Customs vary.
