How the date is determined

The date shown is the day the Purnima tithi prevails at sunrise. Some calendars list the fasting day (Purnima vrat) separately; when Purnima begins in the evening, the fast is often kept the day before.

Many keep a fast, bathe in a river, give charity and perform the Satyanarayan Puja and Katha. The fast is often broken after seeing the moon.
