About this text
This stotra to Shani is traditionally attributed to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, Ram's father. In the verses that frame it in many editions, Dasharatha asks Shani as a boon never to pass through the nakshatra Rohini, and Shani, pleased, grants it. The hymn salutes Shani by his appearance and nature: dark and blue, lean, with long beard and matted hair, deep-set eyes and a slow gait; the son of the Sun; the one whose gaze is feared because, pleased, he gives a kingdom and, displeased, takes it away at once. Online editions differ in how they end: some add a closing request for Shani's grace and a line of narration in different wordings. This page gives the nine verses of salutation that the editions share.
How it is recited
It is commonly recited on Saturdays, often before a Shani image or a peepal tree with a lamp of sesame oil, and during Shani's sade sati. Customs vary.
