Annapurna Aarti ·
The aarti "Barambar Pranam" to Annapurna Devi, the goddess who gives food, sung with salutations again and again.
bārambāra praṇāma maiyā bārambāra praṇāma । jo nahīṃ dhyāve tumheṃ ambike kahāṃ use viśrāma । annapūrṇā devī nāma tihāro lete hota saba kāma ॥
Salutations again and again, Mother, salutations again and again. O Ambika, where is rest for one who does not meditate on you? Your name is Annapurna Devi; by taking it every task is done.
pralaya yugāntara aura janmāntara kālāntara taka nāma । sura suroṃ kī racanā karatī kahām̐ kṛṣṇa kahām̐ rāma ॥
Through the dissolution of the worlds, from age to age, birth to birth and era to era, your name remains. You fashion the gods and all that the gods make, whether Krishna or Rama.
cūmahi caraṇa catura caturānana cāru cakradhara śyāma । caṃdracūṙa candrānana cākara śobhā lakhahi lalāma ॥
The wise four-faced Brahma and the lovely dark discus-bearer Vishnu kiss your feet; the moon-crested, moon-faced Shiva is your servant and gazes on your exquisite beauty.
devī deva dayanīya daśā meṃ dayā dayā tava nāma । trāhi-trāhi śaraṇāgata vatsala śaraṇa rūpa tava dhāma ॥
Gods and goddesses in a pitiable state cry "mercy, mercy"; mercy is your very name. "Save us, save us," they cry; you love those who come for refuge, and your abode is refuge itself.
śrī hrīṃ śraddhā śrīṃ aiṃ vidyā śrī klīṃ kamala kāma । kāntibhrāṃtimayī kāṃti śāṃtimayī vara detu niṣkāma ॥
Shri, Hrim, faith, Shrim, Aim, learning, Shri, Klim, the lotus and desire: these you are. You who are radiance and illusion, radiance and peace, grant boons to those who ask for nothing.
About this text
Annapurna, "she who is full of food", is a form of Parvati who feeds the world. This aarti salutes her again and again and says there is no rest for one who does not meditate on her, while taking her name makes every task succeed. Its stanzas say her name lasts through the dissolution of the worlds, that Brahma and Vishnu kiss her feet and Shiva serves her, that she is mercy itself to gods in distress, and it closes with the seed syllables Shri, Hrim, Shrim, Aim and Klim, naming her as faith, learning and peace. The opening line is sung as a refrain after each stanza.
How it is recited
It is sung at the worship of Annapurna, on Annapurna Jayanti (Margashirsha Purnima) and in the kitchen or before meals by some families. Customs vary.
