Ganesh Atharvashirsha ·
The Upanishad that praises Ganesh as Brahman itself, gives his mantra "Om Gam", and describes the fruits of its study.
oṁ namaste gaṇapataye । tvameva pratyakṣaṃ tattvamasi । tvameva kevalaṃ kartāsi । tvameva kevalaṃ dhartāsi । tvameva kevalaṃ hartāsi । tvameva sarvaṃ khalvidaṃ brahmāsi । tvaṃ sākṣādātmāsi nityam ॥
Om, salutations to you, Ganapati. You alone are the visible "That thou art". You alone are the creator, you alone the sustainer, you alone the destroyer. You alone are truly all this Brahman. You are the eternal Self made manifest.
ṛtaṃ vacmi । satyaṃ vacmi ॥
I speak what is right; I speak what is true.

Protect me. Protect the speaker, the listener, the giver and the sustainer; protect the teacher and the student. Protect me from behind, in front, from the north and the south, from above and below. Protect me, protect me on every side.

You are made of speech, you are made of consciousness; you are made of bliss, you are made of Brahman. You are existence, consciousness and bliss, without a second. You are Brahman made visible. You are made of knowledge and of wisdom.

This whole world arises from you, abides in you, will dissolve into you and returns to you. You are earth, water, fire, air and space. You are the four levels of speech.

You are beyond the three qualities, the three states, the three bodies and the three times. You dwell always in the muladhara. You are the three powers. Yogis meditate on you always. You are Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, Agni, Vayu, Surya and Chandra; you are Brahman, the earth, the atmosphere, heaven and Om.

First utter "ga", the first of the group, then "a", the first of the vowels, with the nasal beyond them, shining with the half-moon, joined with Om: this is the form of your mantra. "Ga" is its first part, "a" its middle, the nasal its last; the bindu is its upper form and the sound (nada) joins them; their union is the junction. This is the knowledge of Ganesh. Its seer is Ganaka, its metre nichrid gayatri, its deity Shri Mahaganapati. Om gam, salutations to Ganapati.
ekadantāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi । tanno dantiḥ pracodayāt ॥
We know the single-tusked one, we meditate on the one with the curved trunk; may the tusked one inspire us.
ekadantaṃ caturhastaṃ pāśamaṅkuśadhāriṇam । radaṃ ca varadaṃ hastairbibhrāṇaṃ mūṣakadhvajam ॥
(उनका ध्यान करें) एक दाँत वाले, चार हाथों वाले, पाश और अंकुश धारण किए, हाथों में दाँत लिए और वर-मुद्रा दिखाते हुए, जिनकी ध्वजा पर मूषक है;
(Meditate on him) single-tusked, four-handed, holding the noose and the goad, holding a tusk and showing the gesture of blessing, with the mouse on his banner;
raktaṃ lambodaraṃ śūrpakarṇakaṃ raktavāsasam । raktagandhānuliptāṅgaṃ raktapuṣpaiḥ supūjitam ॥
लाल वर्ण वाले, बड़े उदर वाले, सूप जैसे कानों वाले, लाल वस्त्र पहने, लाल चंदन से लेपित अंगों वाले, लाल फूलों से पूजित;
Red, large-bellied, with ears like winnowing fans, dressed in red, his body anointed with red sandal paste, worshipped with red flowers;
bhaktānukampinaṃ devaṃ jagatkāraṇamacyutam । āvirbhūtaṃ ca sṛṣṭyādau prakṛteḥ puruṣātparam ॥
The god compassionate to his devotees, the cause of the world, the imperishable, who appeared at the beginning of creation, beyond nature and spirit.
evaṃ dhyāyati yo nityaṃ sa yogī yogināṃ varaḥ ॥
Whoever meditates on him thus every day is a yogi, the best among yogis.

Salutations to the lord of hosts, salutations to Ganapati, salutations to the lord of the attendants; salutations to you, large-bellied, single-tusked, destroyer of obstacles, son of Shiva, embodiment of the giving of boons.
etadatharvaśīrṣaṃ yo'dhīte । sa brahmabhūyāya kalpate । sa sarvavighnairna bādhyate । sa sarvataḥ sukhamedhate । sa pañcamahāpāpāt pramucyate । sāyamadhīyāno divasakṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati । prātaradhīyāno rātrikṛtaṃ pāpaṃ nāśayati । sāyaṃ prātaḥ prayuñjānaḥ pāpo'pāpo bhavati । dharmārthakāmamokṣaṃ ca vindati । idamatharvaśīrṣamaśiṣyāya na deyam । yo yadi mohād dāsyati । sa pāpīyān bhavati । sahasrāvartanādyaṃ yaṃ kāmamadhīte । taṃ tamanena sādhayet ॥
Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit for Brahman, is not hindered by any obstacle, prospers everywhere, and is freed from the five great sins. Studying it in the evening destroys the sins of the day; in the morning, the sins of the night; one who uses it morning and evening becomes free of sin and gains dharma, wealth, desire and liberation. It should not be given to one who is not a disciple; whoever gives it out of delusion becomes sinful. Whatever wish one studies it for, recited a thousand times, one attains that wish by it.
anena gaṇapatimabhiṣiñcati । sa vāgmī bhavati । caturthyāmanaśnan japati । sa vidyāvān bhavati । ityatharvaṇavākyam । brahmādyācaraṇaṃ vidyānna bibheti kadācaneti ॥
One who bathes Ganapati while reciting it becomes eloquent. One who recites it on Chaturthi while fasting becomes learned. This is the saying of the Atharvan (seer): one who knows the conduct of Brahman and the rest never fears.

One who worships with sprouts of durva grass becomes like Kubera; one who worships with puffed rice becomes famous and wise; one who worships with a thousand modaks obtains the desired fruit; one who worships with ghee and sacred fuel obtains everything, everything.
aṣṭau brāhmaṇān samyag grāhayitvā sūryavarcasvī bhavati । sūryagrahe mahānadyāṃ pratimāsannidhau vā japtvā siddhamantro bhavati । mahāvighnāt pramucyate । mahādoṣāt pramucyate । mahāpāpāt pramucyate । mahāpratyavāyāt pramucyate । sa sarvavidbhavati sa sarvavidbhavati । ya evaṃ veda । ityupaniṣat ॥
Having taught it properly to eight brahmins, one becomes radiant as the sun. Having recited it during a solar eclipse, at a great river or before an image, one becomes perfected in the mantra. One is freed from great obstacles, great faults, great sins and great lapses. One becomes all-knowing, all-knowing: whoever knows thus. Thus the Upanishad.
About this text
The Ganapati Atharvashirsha is a short Sanskrit Upanishad, mostly in prose, associated with the Atharvaveda. It addresses Ganesh as the visible form of the ultimate reality: the creator, sustainer and destroyer, beyond the three qualities, states and times, identical with Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra and all the gods. It then teaches the composition of his root mantra (Om Gam), names its seer Ganaka and its metre, gives the Ganesh Gayatri and a meditation on his form, and ends with the benefits of study and worship. It is chanted especially in Maharashtra and during Ganesh Chaturthi.
Editions differ slightly; two of the four independent editions compared add 'सर्वत्राधीयानोऽपविघ्नो भवति' ('one who studies it everywhere becomes free of obstacles') after 'सायं प्रातः प्रयुञ्जानः…', which the other two do not have. In Vedic chanting it carries accent marks, which are not shown on this page.
How it is recited
It is recited on Wednesdays, on Sankashti Chaturthi and Ganesh Chaturthi, and in abhisheka of Ganesh; some recite it 21 or 108 times. Formal Vedic chanting is learned from a teacher; practices vary.
