Durga Saptashloki ·

Seven verses of the Durga Saptashati, beginning "Gyaninamapi chetansi", recited as a short form of the whole text.

jñānināmapi cetāṃsi devī bhagavatī hi sā । balādākṛṣya mohāya mahāmāyā prayacchati ॥

That goddess, the Bhagavati Mahamaya, forcibly draws away even the minds of the wise and casts them into delusion.

durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṃ dadāsi । dāridryaduḥkha bhayahāriṇi kā tvadanyā sarvopakārakaraṇāya sadārdra cittā ॥

Durga, remembered, you take away the fear of every creature; remembered by those at ease, you give a mind most auspicious. You who remove poverty, pain and fear, who but you has a heart ever tender to do good to all?

sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike । śaraṇye tryambake gauri nārāyaṇi namo'stute ॥

Auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, Shiva, accomplisher of every aim, giver of refuge, three-eyed Gauri, Narayani, salutations to you.

    śaraṇāgatadīnārtaparitrāṇaparāyaṇe । sarvasyārtihare devi nārāyaṇi namo'stute ॥

You who are devoted to rescuing the helpless and afflicted who come to you for refuge, goddess who takes away the suffering of all, Narayani, salutations to you.

sarvasvarūpe sarveśe sarvaśaktisamanvite । bhayebhyastrāhi no devi durge devi namo'stute ॥

You who are the form of all, ruler of all, endowed with every power, protect us from fears, goddess; Durga, goddess, salutations to you.

rogānaśeṣānapahaṃsi tuṣṭāruṣṭā tu kāmān sakalānabhīṣṭān । tvāmāśritānāṃ na vipannarāṇāṃ tvāmāśritā hyāśrayatāṃ prayānti ॥

Pleased, you destroy every illness; angered, every cherished desire. Those who take refuge in you meet no misfortune; those who take refuge in you become a refuge for others.

sarvābādhāpraśamanaṃ trailokyasyākhileśvari । evameva tvayā kāryamasmadvairi vināśanam ॥

Queen of all, in the same way you must calm every trouble of the three worlds and destroy our enemies.

About this text

The Durga Saptashloki gathers seven verses of the Devi Mahatmya, the seven hundred verses also called the Durga Saptashati, into a short hymn. In the passage that introduces it in many editions, Shiva asks the Goddess for a simple means of success in the Kali age, and she reveals this praise of the Mother. The verses speak of her as Mahamaya, who can draw even the minds of the wise into delusion; as Durga, who removes fear, poverty and pain when remembered; as Narayani, refuge of the distressed; and they end by asking her to calm every trouble of the three worlds and destroy our enemies. It is recited by those who cannot read the whole Saptashati.
