śāntākāraṃ bhujagaśayanaṃ padmanābhaṃ sureśaṃ viśvādhāraṃ gaganasadṛśaṃ meghavarṇaṃ śubhāṅgam । lakṣmīkāntaṃ kamalanayanaṃ yogihṛddhyānagamyam vande viṣṇuṃ bhavabhayaharaṃ sarvalokaikanātham ॥

I bow to Vishnu, peaceful in form, resting on the serpent, with a lotus at his navel, lord of the gods, support of the universe, vast as the sky, dark as a cloud, of auspicious body; beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, reached in meditation in the hearts of yogis, who removes the fear of worldly existence, the one lord of all the worlds.

About this text

Shantakaram Bhujagashayanam is a Sanskrit dhyana (meditation) verse on Vishnu. It pictures him peaceful in form, resting on the serpent Shesha, with a lotus at his navel, lord of the gods, support of the universe, vast as the sky, dark as a cloud, with an auspicious body, the beloved of Lakshmi, lotus-eyed, reached by yogis in meditation, and ends with a salutation to Vishnu, who removes the fear of worldly existence. It is recited among the dhyana verses at the start of the Vishnu Sahasranama. Editions differ on one word: 'reached by yogis in meditation' (योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यं) or 'reached through meditation in the heart of yogis' (योगिहृद्ध्यानगम्यम्), the reading followed here.
