About this text

The Gopal Chalisa opens by placing the dust of Radha's lotus feet on the head on the banks of the Yamuna, and then tells the life of Krishna in order: his birth to Vasudeva and Devaki with his brother Balarama, his move to Gokul, the slaying of Putana, Trinavarta and Shakatasura, showing the universe in his mouth, stealing butter, freeing the Yamalarjuna trees, killing Baka and Agha, Brahma's theft of the calves, subduing Kaliya, lifting Govardhan, the circle dance, killing Kamsa, studying with Sandipani, sending Uddhava to Braj, marrying Rukmini, making Sudama rich, teaching the Gita to Arjuna and saving Draupadi and the unborn Parikshit. It then names Vishnu's avatars and the devotees he saved, Ajamila, Shabari, the elephant and Dhruva, and asks for the company of saints and a home in Vrindavan. The closing verses name Jayramdev and promise Goloka to those who read it. In a few lines the editions differ; the reading of the most-visited site is shown and all readings are listed.
