Reading these five jewels of Shri Badri destroys sin; it brings the merit of ten million pilgrimages, and its reward is gained.
About this text
Badrinath, one of the four dhams, is the shrine of Vishnu as Badri Narayan on the banks of the Alaknanda. This aarti pictures the cool, fragrant breeze, the shining temple and the pure river flowing nearby, and calls him Vishvambhara, sustainer of the universe. Each stanza names those who worship him: Shesha, Shiva, Brahma and the Vedas, Shakti, Gauri, Ganesh, Sharada and Narada, Indra, Chandra and Kubera, the siddhas, yakshas, kinnaras and gandharvas, Lakshmi waving the whisk, and King Yudhishthira. The last line calls the aarti the "five jewels" of Badri and says reading it destroys sin and gives the merit of ten million pilgrimages. The opening couplet is sung as a refrain.
How it is recited
It is sung at the Badrinath temple and in homes in worship of Badri Narayan, especially when the temple opens for the season. Customs vary.
