Pradosh Vrat · प्रदोष व्रत

Pradosh Vrat is a fast for Shiva on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of each lunar fortnight, twice a month. Its name comes from Pradosh kaal, the twilight after sunset, when Shiva is worshipped. It is named after the weekday: Soma Pradosh on a Monday, Bhauma on a Tuesday, Shani on a Saturday.

How the date is determined

The fast is kept on the day Trayodashi prevails during Pradosh kaal, the period after sunset. Because sunset time varies by city, the Pradosh day can differ between places.

Devotees fast through the day and worship Shiva in the evening twilight with water, bilva leaves and lamps, often reciting the Shiv Chalisa and singing the aarti.
