Hanuman Mantras ·

Four widely recited Sanskrit prayers to Hanuman: the Hanuman Gayatri and three verses of praise.

om anjaneyaya vidmahe vayu putraya dhimahi tanno hanumat prachodayat ||

    oṁ āñjaneyāya vidmahe vāyuputrāya dhīmahi tanno hanumat pracodayāt ॥

    Hanuman Gayatri: Om. May we know Anjaneya (son of Anjana); may we meditate on the son of the Wind; may Hanuman inspire us.

sakala guna nidhanam vanaranamadhisham raghupati priya bhaktam vatajatam namami ||

    atulitabaladhāmaṃ hemaśailābhadehaṃ danujavanakṛśānuṃ jñānināmagragaṇyam । sakalaguṇanidhānaṃ vānarāṇāmadhīśaṃ raghupatipriyabhaktaṃ vātajātaṃ namāmi ॥

    I bow to the son of the Wind: the abode of matchless strength, whose body shines like a golden mountain, a fire to the forest of demons, foremost among the wise, the treasury of all virtues, lord of the monkeys, the beloved devotee of Raghupati (Ram).

buddhir balam yasho dhairyam nirbhayatvam arogata ajadyam vakpatutvam cha hanumat smaranad bhavet ||

    buddhirbalaṃ yaśo dhairyaṃ nirbhayatvaṃ arogatā ajāḍyaṃ vākpaṭutvaṃ ca hanumatsmaraṇād bhavet ॥

    Intelligence, strength, fame, courage, fearlessness, good health, freedom from dullness and skill in speech come from remembering Hanuman.

bashpa vari paripurna lochanam marutim namata rakshasantakam ||

    yatra yatra raghunāthakīrtanaṃ tatra tatra kṛtamastakāṃjalim । bāṣpavāri paripūrṇa locanaṃ mārutiṃ namata rākṣasāṃtakam ॥

    Wherever the praise of Raghunath (Ram) is sung, there he stands with head bowed and palms joined, his eyes filled with tears: bow to Maruti, the destroyer of demons.

About this text

This page gathers four short Sanskrit prayers to Hanuman that are widely recited on their own. The Hanuman Gayatri follows the pattern of the Gayatri mantra, asking him to inspire our understanding. Atulita-bala-dhamam is the third invocation verse of the Sundarkand in Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, praising him as the abode of matchless strength; some editions end it with vatatmajam instead of vatajatam, both meaning "son of the Wind". Buddhir-balam lists the gifts that come from remembering Hanuman, and Yatra yatra describes him standing with folded hands and tearful eyes wherever Ram's name is sung. Each prayer has been compared separately against independent editions. The Manojavam verse has its own page.

How it is recited

These are recited in daily worship, before reading the Sundarkand or Hanuman Chalisa, and especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays; the Gayatri is often chanted 108 times on a mala. Customs vary.
