About this text

Vindhyeshvari, or Vindhyavasini, is the Goddess who dwells in the Vindhya hills, worshipped at Vindhyachal near Mirzapur on the Ganga, one of the major Shakti centres of north India. The chalisa hails her as the queen of Vindhyachal and primal power, then identifies her with goddess after goddess (Vaishnavi, Rudrani, Sharada, Brahmani, Kali, Hinglaj, Shitala, Durga, Lakshmi, Varahi and more). Its second half promises that her recitation clears debts, cures illness, frees prisoners, and grants a son to the childless, and closes saying that even a pauper who reads it becomes a king. The online editions of this chalisa differ in many of its lines; the reading of the most-visited site is shown and every edition's reading is listed under each line where they differ.
