Hanuman Bahuk in English
Roman-script lyrics with English meaning. Read it in Devanagari.
sindhu taran siya-soch haran rabi bal baran tanu | bhuj bisal murati karal kalahu ko kal janu | gahana-dahana-niradahan lank nihsank banka-bhuv | jatudhana-balavan mana-mada-davan pavanasuv | kah tulasidas sevat sulabh sevak hit santat nikat | gun ganat namat sumirat japat saman sakala-sankata-vikat ||
He crossed the ocean and removed Sita's grief; his body has the colour of the rising sun; his arms are mighty and his form so fearsome he seems the death of Death itself. Fearless, with arched brows, he burned the impenetrable Lanka; son of the Wind, he crushed the pride of the mighty demons. Tulsidas says: he is easily won by service and always near to help his servants; whoever sings his virtues, bows, remembers or chants his name finds every terrible trouble calmed.
svarna-saila-sankas koti-ravi tarun tej ghan | ur visal bhuj dand chand nakha-vajratan | ping nayan bhrikuti karal rasana dasananan | kapis kes karakas langur khala-dala-bala-bhanan | kah tulasidas bas jasu ur marutasut murati vikat | santap pap tehi purush pahi sapanehun nahin avat nikat ||
His body is like a golden mountain, with the young radiance of ten million suns; broad-chested, with fierce staff-like arms and a body hard as a thunderbolt; tawny eyes, frowning brows, fearsome tongue and teeth, rough tawny hair and a tail that breaks the strength of the wicked. Tulsidas says: in whose heart this fearsome form of the Wind's son dwells, suffering and sin never come near that person, even in dreams.
panchamukha-chhhahmukh bhrigu mukhy bhat asur sur sarv sari samar samaratth suro | bankuro bir birudait birudavali bed bandi badat paijapuro | jasu gunagath raghunath kah jasubal bipul jal bharit jag jaladhi jhuro | duvan dal daman ko kaun tulasis hai pavan ko put rajaput ruro ||
Five-faced Shiva, six-faced Kartikeya, Parashurama and the foremost heroes, demons and gods, are all able in battle; yet the Vedas, like bards, sing of this proud, famed hero who always keeps his word. Raghunath himself recounts his virtues; by his great strength the ocean of the world, full of water, was as if dried up. Tulsidas asks: who else is there to crush the enemy's ranks? It is the Wind's son, the noble warrior.

Hanuman went to the Sun to study; the Sun took it as a child's play as Hanuman moved backwards before him across the sky, absorbed in mind and deed, without confusion, as a monkey child at play. Seeing this marvel, the guardians of the worlds, Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma were dazzled and astonished. Was it strength, the heroic spirit, patience or courage? Tulsi says it was as if the essence of them all had taken a body.
bharat men parath ke rath kethu kapiraj gajyo suni kururaj dal hal bal bho | kahyo dron bhisham samir sut mahabir bira-rasa-bari-nidhi jako bal jal bho | banar subhay bal keli bhumi bhanu lagi phalang phalang huten ghati nabh tal bho | nai-nai-math jori-jori hath jodha jo hain hanuman dekhe jagajivan ko phal bho ||
In the Mahabharata war, when the monkey king roared from the banner of Arjuna's chariot, the Kaurava army was shaken. Drona and Bhishma said: this is the great hero, son of the Wind, an ocean of heroism whose strength is like its water. As a child he leapt playfully to the sun, and the sky seemed a short jump. Warriors bowed their heads and joined their hands; to see Hanuman was the fruit of life itself.
go-pad payodhi kari holika jyon lai lank nipat nihsank par pur gal bal bho | dron so pahar liyo khyal hi ukhari kar kanduk jyon kapi khel bel kaiso phal bho | sankat samaj asamanjas bho ram raj kaj jug pugani ko karatal pal bho | sahasi samatth tulasi ko nai ja ki banh lok pal palan ko phir thir thal bho ||
He crossed the ocean as if it were a cow's hoofprint and set Lanka ablaze like a Holi fire, fearless in the enemy's city. He plucked up the Drona mountain as easily as a ball, as if picking a bel fruit in play. When Ram's work was in crisis and confusion, he made the work of ages a matter of moments. He is Tulsi's bold and able master, whose arm made the guardians of the worlds firm in their places again.

His feet pressed the tortoise's back like hollows in the ground, and the ocean seemed water in a measuring cup. He became a fortress against the demons and the dwelling-place of the great fish of the sea. For the fuel of Kumbhakarna and Ravana's thunder, his glory became a mighty fire. Bhishma says: in my judgement, no one in the three times or three worlds has had such great strength as Hanuman.

You are the messenger of King Ram, the worthy son of the Wind, Anjani's darling, with glory like the sun; you ended Sita's grief, crushed sin and fault, and protect those who come to you, dear as life to Lakshman. You appeared to destroy the unbearable poverty that is ten-headed Ravana; for Tulsi you are the treasure-house of the three worlds. O Hanuman, wise, virtuous, strong, attentive in service, a knowing master: keep Tulsi in your heart.
davan duvan dal bhuvan bidit bal bed jas gavat bibudh bandi chhhor ko | pap tap timir tuhin nighatan patu sevak saroruh sukhad bhanu bhor ko | lok paralok ten bisok sapane n sok tulasi ke hiye hai bharoso ek or ko | ram ko dularo das bamadev ko nivas | nam kali kamataru kesari kisor ko ||
The crusher of the enemy's army, whose strength the world knows, whose fame the Vedas and gods sing as the freer of captives; skilled at dispelling the darkness and frost of sin and suffering, a dawn sun to the lotuses that are his servants. Free of sorrow in this world and the next, Tulsi has no grief even in dreams, for his heart trusts in one alone: the beloved servant of Ram, in whom Shiva dwells, the young lion of Kesari, whose name is the wish-granting tree of the Kali age.
mahabal sim maha bhim mahaban it mahabir bidit barayo raghubir ko | kulis kathor tanu jor parai ror ran karuna kalit man dharamik dhir ko | durjan ko kalaso karal pal sajjan ko sumire haran har tulasi ki pir ko | siya-sukha-dayak dularo raghunayak ko sevak sahayak hai sahasi samir ko ||
The limit of great strength, very formidable, of great valour, the great hero chosen by Raghubir; with a body hard as a thunderbolt, a roar in battle, a merciful mind, righteous and steadfast; fearsome as death to the wicked, protector of the good, who removes Tulsi's pain when remembered; giver of joy to Sita, dear to Raghunath, the bold son of the Wind is the helper of his servants.
rachibe ko bidhi jaise palibe ko hari har mich maribe ko jyaibe ko sudhapan bho | dharibe ko dharani tarani tam dalibe ko sokhibe krisanu poshibe ko him bhanu bho | khal duhkh doshibe ko jan paritoshibe ko mangibo malinata ko modak dudan bho | arat ki arati nivaribe ko tihun pur tulasi ko saheb hathilo hanuman bho ||
For creating he is like Brahma, for preserving like Vishnu, for destroying like Shiva, death to death and nectar for reviving; for supporting he is the earth, for scattering darkness the sun, for drying up fire, for nourishing the moon. To punish the wicked and satisfy his people, he is like a gift of sweets to those who beg; to remove the distress of the afflicted in all three worlds, Tulsi's master is the steadfast Hanuman.
sevak syokai jani janakis manai kani sanukul sulapani navai nath nank ko | devi dev danav dayavane hvai jorain hath bapure barak kaha aur raja rank ko | jagat sovat baithe bagat binod mod take jo anarth so samarth ek ank ko | sab din ruro parai puro jahan tahan tahi jake hai bharoso hiye hanuman hank ko ||
Knowing his service, the lord of Janaki honours him; the trident-bearing Shiva is favourable, and the lord of heaven bows. Goddesses, gods and demons humbly join their hands, so what of poor kings and paupers? Waking, sleeping, sitting or walking in joy, whatever harm might come to him becomes as nothing. Everything always goes well, wherever he is, for the one whose heart trusts in Hanuman's call.
sanug sagauri sanukul sulapani tahi lokapal sakal lakhan ram janaki | lok paralok ko bisok so tilok tahi tulasi tamai kaha kahu bir anaki | kesari kisor bandichhhor ke nevaje sab kirati bimal kapi karunanidhan ki | balak jyon pali hain kripalu muni siddhata ko jake hiye hulasati hank hanuman ki ||
For him, Shiva with his attendants and Gauri is favourable, and all the guardians of the worlds, Lakshman, Ram and Janaki too. Free of sorrow in this world and the next, Tulsi asks: why would he need any other hero in the three worlds? All whom Kesari's son, the freer of captives, has favoured share the spotless glory of the compassionate monkey. The kind sages and siddhas cherish like a child the one in whose heart Hanuman's call rejoices.

You are the treasury of compassion, of strength and wisdom, of glory, virtue and knowledge. You are Shiva in form, dear to King Ram; taking your name brings wealth, dharma, desire and liberation. Through your own power, and by the nature and character of Sita and Ram, you, Hanuman, are learned in worldly and Vedic ways. In thought, word and deed Tulsi is yours, and you are his wise master.
man ko agam tan sugam kiye kapis kaj maharaj ke samaj saj saje hain | devabandi chhhor ranaror kesari kisor jug jug jag tere birad biraje hain | bir barajor ghati jor tulasi ki or suni sakuchane sadhu khal gan gaje hain | bigari sanvar anjani kumar kije mohin jaise hot aye hanuman ke nivaje hain ||
O lord of the monkeys, you made easy in body what the mind cannot reach, and arranged everything for the great King's company. Freer of the gods' captives, roaring in battle, son of Kesari, your fame has shone in the world age after age. O mighty hero, hearing that Tulsi's strength is failing, the good shrink back and the wicked crowds rejoice. Son of Anjani, set right what has gone wrong for me, as you always have for those you favour.
jan siromani ho hanuman sada jan ke man bas tiharo | dharo bigaro main kako kaha kehi karan khijhat haun to tiharo | saheb sevak nate to hato kiyo so tahan tulasi ko n charo | dosh sunaye tain agehun ko hoshiyar hvain hon man to hiy haro ||
O Hanuman, crest-jewel of the wise, you always dwell in the minds of your people. What harm have I done to anyone, and why are you angry? I am yours. You have set aside the bond of master and servant; Tulsi has no recourse there. If you tell me my faults I will be careful in future, but my heart has lost courage.
tere thapai uthapai n mahes thapai thir ko kapi je ur ghale | tere nibaje garib nibaj birajat bairin ke ur sale | sankat soch sabai tulasi liye nam phatai makari ke se jale | budh bhaye bali merihin bar ki hari pare bahutai nat pale ||
What you establish, even Shiva cannot uproot, and what you uproot cannot be made firm, O monkey, if you strike it down in your heart. The humble whom you favour shine, and pierce the hearts of their enemies. All of Tulsi's troubles and worries split at your name like a spider's web. Have you grown old, dear one, just when it is my turn, or have you tired of caring for so many who bow to you?

You crossed the ocean, crushed great heroes and the wicked, and burned forts as strong as Lanka. In battle you were a lion that tore apart enemy elephants, those proud dandies. Even serving so able a master as you, Tulsi suffers fault and pain like a forest fire. O falcon among monkeys, the wicked birds have grown bold; why do you not catch them as a hawk takes small birds?

Crusher of Aksha, who broke up the grove so that ten-headed Ravana could not look you in the face; a lion to elephants such as Meghnad, Akampana and Kumbhakarna; the wind's darling, wind that spreads the fire of Ram's glory through the forest of enemies: Tulsi says he is always his protector from sin, from curses and from the three kinds of suffering.

The world knows that Hanuman has favoured his people; knowing my mind, dear one, do not forget your word. When was Tulsi ever at fault in service? Uphold your nature and your mastership, O monkey lord. If you think me guilty, punish me a thousand ways, but one who would die from a sweet should not be given poison. Bold darling of the Wind, beloved of Raghubir, great hero, quickly remove the pain in my arm.

Seeing me a child, from my early years you made me your own, friend of the humble, with kindness free of conditions. Tulsi trusts in you alone, his strength and hope are yours; think of me as your servant. The terrible Kali age has troubled whom not? Seeing its foot on my head, push it away. Son of Kesari, roaring in battle, mighty hero: throw down and kill the pain in my arm as you once threw down Rahu's mother.

Son of Kesari, who unsettles the settled and settles the unsettled, gather your strength. Messenger of Ram, wish-granting tree to Ram's servants, you are the pillow of support for the poor and weak like me. With so able a master over Tulsi's head, even that guiltless one is bound and beaten. My arm is a broad pond; seize the creature of pain in it like a crocodile and tear open its jaws.

Love of Ram, the courage of Ram, Lakshman and Sita, devotion to Ram: remove my worry and trouble. As the monkeys, joyful but overcome, looked at the sea of disease and lost heart, Jambavan placed his great trust in you. Leap, merciful one, from the mountain of Tulsi's love; sit on the good ground of Suvela with the bears and take counsel. O bold great hero, why not crush the wretched pain in my arm with one kick, as you did Lankini?

In this world, the next or the three worlds, with all four eyes one cannot see anyone as able as you. Karma, time, the guardians of the worlds, all beings moving and still are in your hand, lord; consider your own greatness. In the heart of your own servant is your dwelling; yet Tulsi, your devotee, is seen greatly suffering. The pain in my arm, rooted in the wind (disease), is a creeper of itching kapikachhu grown up; pull it out in a monkey's play.

Relying on King Kamsa and her own cruel karma, this demoness, sister of Baka, fears no one. She is huge and terrible, a killer of children, beyond description; she will deceive the little ones by force of arms. She has come in disguise; think and see for yourself: her sin will fall on the wise one who protects. As Krishna killed the demoness Putana, O great monkey hero, the pain in Tulsi's arm will die when you strike it.

Is this harsh pain from fate, from time, from anger, from the three humours, or the shadow of sin, suffering and deceit? Is it from the trickery of karma, or of spells, charms and herbs? Run away, sinful one, dark of mind! You will be punished, I tell you openly; do not be foolish, know the monkey lord's ways. By the oath of mighty Hanuman, by the vow of the great hero: may the pain stay in my arm no longer.

He slew Simhika by strength, set Surasa right by guile, threw down and killed Lankini and laid waste the grove. He burned Lanka, tore apart the she-crocodile, again and again seized demons and turned them to dust. Breaking Yama's noose, he brought out Mandodari, the queen of Ravana and mother of Meghnad. The great hero has fully kept his trust; but for whose sake is Tulsi's worry over his arm so heavy?

Hearing of your childhood play, O hero, even the steadfast tremble, and Indra, the Sun and Rahu forget themselves. All the guardians of the worlds live free of sorrow under your arm; taking your name, no one remains in distress. Conciliation, gifts, division and force, Vedic and worldly success, are all in the hands of the monkey lord, who holds thief and merchant alike by the hair. Was it laziness, displeasure or a jest to teach me, that the pain in Tulsi's arm has stayed so long?

A pauper wandering from house to house for scraps, I was called by the kind one and raised like a child, protector of the humble. Son of Anjani, you have taken good care of me; you will not forget your own, and I trust in you. I say this much in complaint: you are able in every way today, O monkey king; truly, who in the three worlds is like you? Yet your servant suffers; seeing it, you make a jest of it, like children playing at the death of a little bird.

Whether from my own sins, from threefold suffering or from a curse, the pain in my arm has grown and cannot be borne. Many medicines, spells, charms and remedies have failed; appeasing the gods only made it worse. The creator, sustainer and destroyer of karma and time is the snare of this world, which obeys no one. Tulsi is your servant and you are mine, O messenger of Ram; your delay, hero, makes me ache more than the pain itself.

Messenger of King Ram, worthy son of the Wind, as able as hands and feet themselves, help of the helpless; your proud fame is known and sung in the Vedas; a warrior like Ravana reeled at the blow of your fist. Favoured by so great and able a master, today your good servant suffers in mind, word and body. The pain in my arm is small, but Tulsi's shame is great: what sin is it, what anger, that your power is hidden?

Goddesses, gods, demons, humans, sages, siddhas and serpents, all beings great and small, conscious and unconscious, ogresses like Putana, demons male and female, all bow their heads to the command of Ram's messenger. Terrible spells, deceit, foul diseases and evil influences leave their dwelling on hearing Hanuman's oath. Be angry with karma, enlighten Tulsi, and seek out those who bring him fault and pain.

By your strength the monkeys won the war against Ravana; struck by you, the demons were left in every house. By your strength Ram's reign accomplished all the gods' work and Raghubar's whole company was arrayed. Hearing your praise, the gods thrill, and the eyes of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva fill with tears. O lord of monkeys, pass your hand over Tulsi's head; do not let your servant suffer while you are so generous a master.

I was raised on your crumbs; though I have erred, do not abandon me, cruel as I am, worth half a cowrie; look towards your own. Like the guileless Shiva, the innocent one, who is angered at small faults, nourish, satisfy and establish your own, and do not fear now. You are the water and I am the dust in the water; you are the mother and I am the child: do not delay; you alone are my support. Knowing your child is distressed, protect him, recognise his love, and pass your long tail over Tulsi's arm.

gheri liyo rogani kujogani kulogani jyaun basar jalad ghan ghata dhuki dhai hai | barasat bari pir jariye javase jas rosh binu dosh dhum mul malinai hai | karunanidhan hanuman maha balavan heri hansi hanki phunki phaunjai te urai hai | khaye huto tulasi kurog rarh rakasani kesari kisor rakhe bir bariai hai ||
Diseases, bad influences and bad people have surrounded me, as dense clouds rush in on a summer day. Raining down pain, they burn me like the jawasa plant; there is anger without fault, smoke and gloom. Compassionate Hanuman, mighty one, looked, laughed, shouted and blew, and scattered their armies. The ogres of foul disease would have devoured Tulsi; the hero, son of Kesari, saved him by force.
ram gulam tu hi hanuman gosani susani sada anukulo | palyo haun bal jyon akhar du pitu matu son mangal mod samulo | banh ki bedan banh pagar pukarat arat anand bhulo | shri raghubir nivariye pir rahaun darabar paro lati lulo ||
You alone, Hanuman, are Ram's servant, a good master, always favourable. As a father and mother raise a child, you raised me on the two letters (Ra-ma), with joy and blessing at the root. With the pain in my arm, I cry out to the protector of arms, afflicted, all joy forgotten. O Shri Raghubir, remove my pain; let me stay at your court, weak and crippled though I am.
kal ki karalata karam kathinai kidhau pap ke prabhav ki subhay bay bavare | bedan kubhanti so sahi n jati rati din soi banh gahi jo gahi samir dabare | layo taru tulasi tiharo so nihari bari sinchiye malin bho tayo hai tihun tavare | bhutani ki apani paraye ki kripa nidhan janiyat sabahi ki riti ram ravare ||
Is it the cruelty of time, the hardness of karma, the power of sin, or the nature of this mad wind (disease)? The pain is so harsh it cannot be borne night or day; the same arm that the Wind's son once took hold of. Tulsi is the tree you yourself planted; seeing it, water it, for it has withered, scorched by the three fires. O Ram, treasury of grace, you know the ways of all beings, your own and others.
pany pir pet pir banh pir munh pir jar jar sakal pir mi hai | dev bhut pitar karam khal kal grah mohi par davari damanak si di hai | haun to binu mol ke bikano bali bare hiten ot ram nam ki lalat likhi li hai | kunbhaj ke kinkar bikal burhe gokhurani hay ram ray aisi hal kahun bhi hai ||
Pain in the feet, pain in the belly, pain in the arm, pain in the mouth; my whole worn-out body has become pain. Gods, spirits, ancestors, karma, the wicked, time and the planets have all rushed upon me like a hailstorm. I was sold to you without price from childhood, and have written the shelter of Ram's name on my forehead. The servants of Agastya are distressed and drowning in a cow's hoofprint; alas, King Ram, has such a thing happened anywhere?
bahuk subahu nich lichar marich mili munh pir ketuja kurog jatudhan hai | ram nam jap jag kiyo chahon sanurag kal kaise dut bhut kaha mere man hai | sumire sahay ram lakhan akhar dauu jinake samuh sake jagat jahan hai | tulasi sanbhari tadaka sanhari bhari bhat bedhe baragad se banai banavan hai ||
The pains of my arms are like the vile demons Subahu and Maricha, and the pain in my mouth is a demon of disease born of Ketu. I want to perform with love the sacrifice of chanting Ram's name; what are these messengers of death and ghosts to me? Remembered, the two letters of Ram and Lakshman help me, whose many deeds the world knows. Tulsi recalls how they slew Tataka and pierced the great warriors, making them like banyan trees full of arrows.
balapane sudhe man ram sanamukh bhayo ram nam let mangi khat tuk tak haun | parayo lok riti men punit priti ram ray moh bas baitho tori taraki tarak haun | khote khote acharan acharat apanayo anjani kumar sodhyo ramapani pak haun | tulasi gusani bhayo bhonde din bhul gayo tako phal pavat nidan paripak haun ||
As a child, with a simple mind, I turned towards Ram; taking Ram's name, I begged and ate scraps. Then I fell into worldly ways, and in delusion broke off my pure love for King Ram. Even while I did bad deeds, the son of Anjani took me as his own and purified me in Ram's hand. Tulsi became a master, forgot his wretched days, and now at last receives the ripe fruit of that.
asan basan hin bisham bishad lin dekhi din dubaro karai n hay hay ko | tulasi anath so sanath raghunath kiyo diyo phal sil sindhu apane subhay ko | nich yahi bich pati pai bharu haigo bihai prabhu bhajan bachan man kay ko | ta ten tanu peshiyat ghor barator mis phuti phuti nikasat lon ram ray ko ||
Without food or clothes, sunk in bitter sorrow, the poor and weak one gets no pity from anyone. Raghunath, the ocean of good nature, made the orphan Tulsi his own and gave him the fruit of his own nature. But in between, this low one, having found a master, grew proud and gave up worshipping the Lord in word, mind and body. So the salt of King Ram is seen bursting out of my body in the form of terrible boils.
jio jag janakijivan ko kahai jan maribe ko baranasi bari surasari ko | tulasi ke dohun hath modak hain aise thanu jake jiye muye soch karihain n lari ko | moko jhunto sancho log ram kau kahat sab mere man man hai n har ko n hari ko | bhari pir dusah sarir ten bihal hot sou raghubir binu sakai dur kari ko ||
To live, I am called the servant of Janaki's beloved; to die, there is Varanasi and the water of the Ganga. Tulsi has sweets in both hands in such a place; whether he lives or dies, he worries for no one. People call me true or false, but all call me Ram's; my mind cares for no one but Hari and Hara. This heavy, unbearable pain is wearing out my body; who but Raghubir can take it away?
sitapati saheb sahay hanuman nit hit upadesh ko mahes mano guru kai | manas bachan kay saran tihare pany tumhare bharose sur main n jane sur kai | byadhi bhut janit upadhi kahu khal ki samadhi ki jai tulasi ko jani jan phur kai | kapinath raghunath bholanath bhutanath rog sindhu kyon n dariyat gay khur kai ||
Sita's lord is my master, Hanuman always my helper, and Shiva my guru who teaches me my good. In mind, word and body I have taken refuge at your feet; trusting you, I know no other god. Whatever trouble from disease, spirits or some wicked one, settle it, knowing Tulsi to be your true servant. O lord of monkeys, Raghunath, Bholanath, lord of beings: why not make this ocean of disease as small as a cow's hoofprint?

I say to wise Hanuman, to King Ram, to Shankara the treasury of grace: listen attentively. All this world made by Brahma is seen to be full of joy and sorrow, attachment and anger, virtue and fault. The Vedas say that Ram is the maker of maya, souls, time, karma and nature; consider it true in your mind. What can you not do? Alas, explain it to me; I too will stay silent and reap what I have sown.
