By the power of that vow he was blessed with wealth and sons; he enjoyed happiness in this world and at the end went to the abode of Satya.

Suta said: 'Further, I will tell you, listen, best of sages. Long ago there was a wise king named Ulkamukha.

jitendriyah satyavadi yayau devalayan prati | dine dine dhanan dattva dvijan santoshayat sudhih ||
Self-controlled and truthful, he went to the temple; every day the wise king gave wealth and pleased the brahmins.

His lovely wife, lotus-faced and devoted, kept the vow of Satya on the bank of the river Bhadrashila.

etasminnantare tatra sadhurekah samagatah | vanijyarthan bahudhanairanekaih paripuritah ||
Meanwhile a merchant (sadhu) came there, his boat loaded with much wealth for trade.

navan sansthapya tattire jagama nripatin prati | drishtva sa vratinan bhupan paprachchhha vinayanvitah ||
Mooring his boat on that bank, he went to the king, and seeing the king keeping the vow, he asked him humbly:
sadhuruvacha | kimidan kurushe rajan bhaktiyuktena chetasa | prakashan kuru tatsarvan shrotumichchhhami sampratam ||
The merchant said: "What is this, king, that you are doing with such devotion? Reveal it all; I wish to hear it now."
rajovacha | pujanan kriyate sadho vishnoratulatejasah | vratan cha svajanaih sardhan putradyavaptikamyaya ||
The king said: "Merchant, this is the worship of Vishnu of matchless radiance, a vow kept with my family in the hope of children and other blessings."
bhupasya vachanan shrutva sadhuh provacha sadaram | sarvan kathaya me rajan karishye'han tavoditam ||
Hearing the king's words, the merchant said respectfully: "Tell me all of it, king; I will do as you say.
mamapi santatirnasti hyetasmajjayate dhruvam | tato nivritya vanijyat sanando grihamagatah ||
I too have no children; through this I shall surely have them." Then, returning from his trade, he came home joyfully.
bharyayai kathitan sarvan vratan santatidayakam | tada vratan karishyami yada me santatirbhavet ||
He told his wife all about the vow that grants children: "I will keep the vow when I have a child."
iti lilavati praha patnin sadhuh sasattamah | ekasmin divase tasya bharya lilavati sati ||
So the good merchant told his wife Lilavati. One day his virtuous wife Lilavati,
bhartriyuktanandachitta'bhavad dharmaparayana | garbhini sa'bhavattasya bharya satyaprasadatah ||
devoted to dharma and happy in her husband's company, became pregnant by the grace of Satyadeva.
dashame masi vai tasyah kanyaratnamajayata | dine dine sa vavridhe shuklapakshe yatha shashi ||
In the tenth month a jewel of a daughter was born to her, and she grew day by day like the moon in the bright fortnight.
namna kalavati cheti tannamakaranan kritam | tato lilavati praha svaminan madhuran vachah ||
She was named Kalavati. Then Lilavati spoke sweet words to her husband:
na karoshi kimarthan vai pura sankalpitan vratam | sadhuruvacha | vivahasamaye tvasyah karishyami vratan priye ||
"Why do you not keep the vow you promised before?" The merchant said: "I will keep the vow at the time of her wedding, my dear."
iti bharyan samashvasya jagama nagaran prati | tatah kalavati kanya vavridhe pitriveshmani ||
Reassuring his wife in this way, he went off to the city. Then the girl Kalavati grew up in her father's house.
drishtva kanyan tatah sadhurnagare sakhibhih saha | mantrayitva drutan dutan preshayamasa dharmavit ||
Seeing his daughter grown, the merchant, who knew dharma, consulted his friends in the city and quickly sent a messenger:
vivaharthan cha kanyaya varan shreshthan vicharaya | tenajnaptashcha duto'sau kanchanan nagaran yayau ||
"Look for an excellent groom for my daughter's marriage." So instructed, the messenger went to the city of Kanchana,
tasmadekan vanikputran samadayagato hi sah | drishtva tu sundaran balan vanikputran gunanvitam ||
and came back bringing a merchant's son. Seeing the handsome young merchant's son, full of good qualities,
jnatibhi-rbandhubhih sardhan paritushtena chetasa | dattavan sadhuputraya kanyan vidhi-vidhanatah ||
the merchant, with his kin and relatives and a contented heart, gave his daughter to the young man with due rites.
tato'bhagyavashat tena vismritan vratamuttamam | vivahasamaye tasyastena rushto'bhavat prabhuh ||
Then, by ill fortune, he forgot the excellent vow at the time of her wedding, and the Lord grew angry with him.
tatah kalena niyato nijakarmavisharadah | vanijyarthan tatah shighran jamatrisahito vanik ||
In time, skilled in his own trade, the merchant soon set out to do business, taking his son-in-law with him.
ratnasarapure ramye gatva sindhu samipatah | vanijyamakarot sadhurjamatra shrimata saha ||
Going to the lovely city of Ratnasara near the sea, the merchant traded together with his fortunate son-in-law.
tau gatau nagare ramye chandraketornripasya cha | etasminneva kale tu satyanarayanah prabhuh ||
The two went to the lovely city of King Chandraketu. At that very time Lord Satyanarayana,
bhrashtapratijnama-lokya shapan tasmai pradattavan | darunan kathinan chasya mahad duhkhan bhavishyati ||
seeing that he had broken his promise, cursed him: "A terrible, hard and great sorrow will come upon him."
ekasmindivase rajno dhanamadaya taskarah | tatraiva chagata shchauro vanijau yatra sansthitau ||
One day a thief, carrying off the king's wealth, came to the very place where the two merchants were staying.
tatpashchad dhavakan dutan drishtva bhitena chetasa | dhanan sansthapya tatraiva sa tu shighramalakshitah ||
Then, seeing the king's men running after him, he left the wealth right there in fright and quickly slipped away unseen.
tato dutah samayata yatraste sajjano vanik | drishtva nripadhanan tatra baddhva''nitau vaniksutau ||
Then the messengers came to where the good merchant was; seeing the king's wealth there, they bound the two merchants and brought them away.
harshena dhavamanashcha uchurnripasamipatah | taskarau dvau samanitau vilokyajnapaya prabho ||
Running joyfully to the king they said: "We have brought the two thieves; look at them and give your command, lord."
rajna''jnaptastatah shighran dridhan baddhva tu tavubhau | sthapitau dvau mahadurge karagare'vicharatah ||
Ordered by the king, they quickly bound the two tightly and, without inquiry, put them in prison in the great fort.
mayaya satyadevasya na shrutan kaistayorvachah | atastayordhanan rajna grihitan chandraketuna ||
Through Satyadeva's maya no one listened to their words, and so King Chandraketu took their wealth.
tachchhhapachcha tayorgehe bharya chaivatiduhkhita | chaurenapahritan sarvan grihe yachcha sthitan dhanam ||
Through that curse, at their home the wife too was in great distress; a thief stole all the wealth that was in the house.

Beset by worry and illness, tormented by hunger and thirst, anxious for food, she wandered from house to house; and the girl Kalavati too wandered every day.
ekasmin divase jata kshudharta dvijamandiram | gatva'pashyad vratan tatra satyanarayanasya cha ||
One day, hungry, she went to a brahmin's house, and there she saw the vow of Satyanarayana being kept.

She sat down, heard the story and prayed for a boon; and after eating the prasad she went home at night.

mata kalavatin kanyan kathayamasa prematah | putri ratrau sthita kutra kin te manasi vartate ||
The mother spoke lovingly to her daughter Kalavati: "Daughter, where were you tonight? What is on your mind?"

The girl Kalavati quickly said to her mother: "Mother, at a brahmin's house I saw the vow that fulfils wishes."

Hearing her daughter's words, the merchant's wife joyfully set about keeping the vow of Satyanarayana.

vratan chakre saiva sadhvi bandhubhih svajanaih saha | bhartri-jamatarau kshipramagachchhhetan svamashramam ||
That good woman kept the vow with her kin and relatives, praying: "May my husband and son-in-law quickly come home,

Having spoken thus to the king, the Lord vanished. Then in the morning the king, with his people,

"हम दोनों वणिक-पुत्रों को बेड़ियों से छुड़ाकर ले आए हैं।" तब दोनों वणिकों ने श्रेष्ठ राजा चंद्रकेतु को प्रणाम किया;
"We have brought the two merchants, freed from their chains." Then the two merchants bowed to the noble King Chandraketu;

smarantau purvavrittantan nochaturbhayavihvalau | raja vaniksutau vikshya vachah provacha sadaram ||
remembering what had happened, they were overcome with fear and could not speak. Seeing the two merchants, the king spoke kindly:
daivat praptan mahadduhkhamidanin nasti vai bhayam | tada nigadasantyagan kshaurakarmadyakarayat ||

Giving them clothes and ornaments, the king made them content, honoured the two merchants and comforted them greatly with his words.

Suta said: 'The merchant began his journey with auspicious rites, gave wealth to brahmins and set out for his city.
kiyad dure gate sadhau satyanarayanah prabhuh | jijnasan kritavan sadho kimasti tava nausthitam ||
When the merchant had gone some distance, Lord Satyanarayana (as an ascetic) asked to know: "Merchant, what is in your boat?"
tato mahajanau mattau helaya cha prahasya vai | kathan prichchhhasi bho dandin mudran netun kimichchhhasi ||
Then the two merchants, proud, laughed at him scornfully: "Why do you ask, ascetic? Do you want to take our money?
lata-patradikan chaiva vartate taranau mama | nishthuran cha vachah shrutva satyan bhavatu te vachah ||
There are only creepers and leaves in my boat." Hearing these harsh words he said: "Let your words come true."
evamuktva gatah shighran dandi tasya samipatah | kiyaddure tato gatva sthitah sindhusamipatah ||
Saying this, the ascetic quickly went away from him, and after going some distance stayed near the sea.
gate dandini sadhushcha kritanityakriyastada | utthitan taranin drishtva vismayan paraman yayau ||
When the ascetic had gone, the merchant finished his daily rites; seeing the boat riding high in the water, he was utterly astonished,
drishtva latadikan chaiva murchchhhito nyapatad bhuvi | labdhasanjno vanikputrastatashchintanvito'bhavat ||
and seeing only creepers and leaves in it, he fainted and fell to the ground. When he came round, the merchant was filled with worry.
tada tu duhituh kanto vachanan chedamabravit | kimarthan kriyate shokah shapo dattashcha dandina ||
Then the daughter's husband said: "Why grieve? The ascetic has cursed us.
shakyate tena sarvan hi kartun chatra na sanshayah | atastachchhharanan yamo vanchhhitartho bhavishyati ||
He can do anything, there is no doubt; so let us go to him for refuge, and our wish will be fulfilled."
jamaturvachanan shrutva tatsakashan gatastada | drishtva cha dandinan bhaktya natva provacha sadaram ||
Hearing his son-in-law's words he went to him, and seeing the ascetic he bowed with devotion and said respectfully:
kshamasva chaparadhan me yaduktan tava sannidhau | evan punah punarnatva mahashokakulo'bhavat ||
"Forgive my fault, what I said before you." Bowing again and again in this way, he was overcome with great grief.
provacha vachanan dandi vilapantan vilokya cha | ma rodih shrinumadvakyan mama pujabahirmukhah ||
उसे रोते देखकर दंडी ने कहा: "मत रोओ; मेरी बात सुनो। तुम मेरी पूजा से विमुख हो;
Seeing him weeping, the ascetic said: "Do not weep; hear my words. You turned away from my worship;
mamajnaya cha durbuddhe labdhan duhkhan muhurmuhuh | tachchhhrutva bhagavadvakyan stutin kartun samudyatah ||
by my command, foolish one, you have met with sorrow again and again." Hearing the Lord's words, he set about praising him.
sadhuruvacha | tvanmayamohitah sarve brahmadyastridivaukasah | na jananti gunan rupan tavashcharyamidan prabho ||
The merchant said: "All the gods of heaven, Brahma and the rest, are deluded by your maya; they do not know your qualities or your form. This is a wonder, Lord.
mudho'han tvan kathan jane mohitastava mayaya | prasida pujayishyami yathavibhavavistaraih ||
I am a fool, deluded by your maya; how could I know you? Be gracious; I will worship you as fully as my means allow.
pura vittan cha tat sarvan trahi man sharanagatam | shrutva bhaktiyutan vakyan paritushto janardanah ||
Restore all my former wealth and protect me, who have come to you for refuge." Hearing these words full of devotion, Janardana was well pleased.
varan cha vanchhhitan dattva tatraivantardadhe harih | tato navan samaruhya drishtva vittaprapuritam ||
Granting the boon he wished for, Hari vanished on the spot. Then, boarding the boat and seeing it full of wealth,
kripaya satyadevasya saphalan vanchhhitan mama | ityuktva svajanaih sardhan pujan kritva yathavidhi ||
he said: "By Satyadeva's grace my wish is fulfilled." Saying this, he performed the puja with his people as prescribed,
harshena chabhavat purnahsatyadevaprasadatah | navan sanyojya yatnena svadeshagamanan kritam ||
and was filled with joy by Satyadeva's grace. Carefully making the boat ready, he set out for his own country.
sadhurjamataran praha pashya ratnapurin mama | dutan cha preshayamasa nijavittasya rakshakam ||
The merchant said to his son-in-law: "Look, there is my city of gems." And he sent a messenger, the keeper of his wealth, ahead.
tato'sau nagaran gatva sadhubharyan vilokya cha | provacha vanchhhitan vakyan natva baddhanjalistada ||
The messenger went to the city, and seeing the merchant's wife, bowed with joined palms and gave the longed-for news:
nikate nagarasyaiva jamatra sahito vanik | agato bandhuvargaishcha vittaishcha bahubhiryutah ||
"The merchant has arrived near the city with his son-in-law, together with his kinsmen and much wealth."
shrutva dutamukhadvakyan mahaharshavati sati | satyapujan tatah kritva provacha tanujan prati ||
Hearing this from the messenger, the good wife was overjoyed; she performed the Satya puja and then said to her daughter:
vrajami shighramagachchhha sadhusandarshanaya cha | iti matrivachah shrutva vratan kritva samapya cha ||
"I am going; come quickly to see the merchant." Hearing her mother's words, she finished the vow,
prasadan cha parityajya gata sa'pi patin prati | tena rushtah satyadevo bhartaran taranin tatha ||
but leaving the prasad aside, she too went to meet her husband. Angered by this, Satyadeva took her husband and the boat
and sank them with the wealth in the water. Then the girl Kalavati, not seeing her husband,
shokena mahata tatra rudati chapatad bhuvi | drishtva tathavidhan navan kanyan cha bahuduhkhitam ||
fell to the ground there, weeping in great grief. Seeing the boat in that state and the girl in deep sorrow,
bhitena manasa sadhuh kimashcharyamidan bhavet | chintyamanashcha te sarve babhuvustarivahakah ||
the merchant was frightened: "What wonder is this?" And all the boatmen were lost in worry.
Then Lilavati, seeing her daughter, was distraught; she lamented in great sorrow and said to her husband:
idanin naukaya sardhan kathan so'bhudalakshitah | na jane kasya devasya helaya chaiva sa hrita ||
"How has he vanished just now, together with the boat? I do not know by the slight of which god it was taken.
satyadevasya mahatmyan jnatun va kena shakyate | ityuktva vilalapaiva tatashcha svajanaih saha ||
Who can know the greatness of Satyadeva?" Saying this she lamented, and then together with her people
tato lilavati kanyan krode kritva ruroda ha | tatah kalavati kanya nashte svamini duhkhita ||
Lilavati took her daughter in her lap and wept. Then the girl Kalavati, grieving at the loss of her husband,
grihitva paduke tasyanugatun cha manodadhe | kanyayashcharitan drishtva sabharyah sajjano vanik ||
took his sandals and resolved to follow him. Seeing what his daughter meant to do, the good merchant, with his wife,
burning with grief, the knower of dharma, reflected: "It has been taken by Satyadeva; I am confused by Satya's maya.
satyapujan karishyami yathavibhavavistaraih | iti sarvan samahuya kathayitva manoratham ||
I will perform the Satya puja as fully as my means allow." So he called everyone and told them his wish,
natva cha dandavad bhumau satyadevan punah punah | tatastushtah satyadevo dinanan paripalakah ||
and bowed full-length on the ground to Satyadeva again and again. Then Satyadeva, protector of the humble, was pleased,
jagada vachanan chainan kripaya bhaktavatsalah | tyaktva prasadan te kanya patin drashtun samagata ||
और भक्तवत्सल भगवान ने कृपा करके यह वचन कहा: "तुम्हारी कन्या प्रसाद छोड़कर पति को देखने आ गई;
and, loving to his devotees, spoke these words in mercy: "Your daughter left the prasad and came to see her husband;
ato'drishto'bhavattasyah kanyakayah patirdhruvam | grihan gatva prasadan cha bhuktva sa''yati chetpunah ||
that is surely why her husband became invisible. If she goes home, eats the prasad and comes back,
labdhabhartri suta sadho bhavishyati na sanshayah | kanyaka tadrishan vakyan shrutva gaganamandalat ||
your daughter will regain her husband, merchant; there is no doubt." Hearing such words from the sky, the girl
kshipran tada grihan gatva prasadan cha bubhoja sa | pashchat sa punaragatya dadarsha svajanan patim ||
quickly went home and ate the prasad. Afterwards she came back and saw her people and her husband.
tatah kalavati kanya jagada pitaran prati | idanin cha grihan yahi vilamban kurushe katham ||
Then the girl Kalavati said to her father: "Now go home; why do you delay?"
tachchhhrutva kanyakavakyan santushto'bhudvaniksutah | pujanan satyadevasya kritva vidhividhanatah ||
Hearing his daughter's words, the merchant was content; he worshipped Satyadeva with the prescribed rites,
dhanairbandhuganaih sardhan jagama nijamandiram | paurnamasyan cha sankrantau kritavan satyapujanam ||
and went to his own home with his wealth and kinsmen. On full-moon days and at sankrantis he performed the Satya puja,
iha loke sukhan bhuktva chante satyapuran yayau ||
and having enjoyed happiness in this world, at the end he went to Satyapura (the Lord's abode).
suta uvacha | athanyachcha pravakshyami shrinudhvan munisattamah | asit tungadhvajo raja prajapalanatatparah ||
Suta said: 'Now I will tell another story; listen, best of sages. There was a king, Tungadhvaja, devoted to protecting his people.
prasadan satyadevasya tyaktva duhkhamavapa sah | ekada sa vanan gatva hatva bahuvidhan pashun ||
He rejected Satyadeva's prasad and met with sorrow. Once he went to the forest and, after killing many kinds of animals,
agatya vatamulan cha drishtva satyasya pujanam | gopah kurvanti santushta bhaktiyuktah sa bandhavah ||
came to the foot of a banyan tree, where he saw cowherds, content and devout, worshipping Satya with their kin.
Seeing this, the king in his pride neither went there nor bowed. Then all the cowherds placed prasad before the king,
sansthapya punaragatya bhuktva sarve yathepsitam | tatah prasadan santyajya raja duhkhamavapa sah ||
went back and all ate as much as they wished. Then, having rejected the prasad, the king met with sorrow.
tasya putrashatan nashtan dhanadhanyadikan cha yat | satyadevena tatsarvan nashitan mama nishchitam ||
His hundred sons perished, and his wealth, grain and all else. "Satyadeva has surely destroyed all this of mine,
atastatraiva gachchhhami yatra devasya pujanam | manasa tu vinishchitya yayau gopalasannidhau ||
so I will go to the very place where the god is worshipped." Resolving this in his mind, he went to the cowherds.
tato'sau satyadevasya pujan gopaganaih saha | bhaktishraddhanvito bhutva chakara vidhina nripah ||
Then the king, full of devotion and faith, worshipped Satyadeva with the cowherds according to the rites.
satyadevaprasadena dhanaputranvito'bhavat | ihaloke sukhan bhukttva chante satyapuran yayau ||
By Satyadeva's grace he again had wealth and sons; having enjoyed happiness in this world, at the end he went to Satyapura.
Whoever keeps this most rare Satya vow, and listens with devotion to this holy, fruitful story,
dhanadhanyadikan tasya bhavet satyaprasadatah | daridro labhate vittan baddho muchyeta bandhanat ||
उसे सत्यदेव की कृपा से धन-धान्य आदि मिलता है। दरिद्र को धन मिलता है; बंधा हुआ बंधन से छूट जाता है;
will have wealth, grain and more by Satya's grace. The poor gain wealth; the bound are freed from bondage;
