पद्धति

पाठों का मिलान

1. हम किसी पाठ के कई प्रकाशन एकत्र करते हैं और उसकी पंक्तियाँ निकालते हैं।
2. सॉफ़्टवेयर उन्हें पंक्तिबद्ध करता है और ऐसे अंतर सामान्य करता है जो पाठ नहीं बदलते: विराम चिह्न, छंद-संख्या, रिक्त स्थान, "दोहा" या "छंद" जैसे शीर्षक, और वह क्रम जिसमें कुछ साइटें अनुनासिक और नुक्ता टाइप करती हैं।
3. एक-दूसरे की नकल करने वाले स्रोतों का समूह बनाकर उन्हें एक गिना जाता है।
4. हर पंक्ति के लिए वह पाठ लिया जाता है जो सबसे अधिक स्वतंत्र समूह देते हैं, बशर्ते कम से कम दो सहमत हों।
5. जो पंक्तियाँ केवल वर्तनी में भिन्न हों, वे पाठ की भाषा की परंपरा से तय होती हैं (जैसे तुलसीदास में अवधी वर्तनी)। जो पंक्तियाँ फिर भी विवादित रहें, वे केवल उसी पाठ के पक्ष में तय होती हैं जो स्रोतों में वास्तव में छपा है, और कारण लिखा जाता है; अन्यथा पाठ रोका जाता है।

केवल मात्रा में भिन्न पाठ भी अर्थ बदल सकते हैं, इसलिए हर ऐसे स्थान को प्रसंग में पढ़कर जाँचा जाता है।

तिथियों की गणना

हमारा पंचांग-तंत्र स्थापित खगोलीय विधियों से सूर्य और चंद्रमा की स्थिति निकालता है, लाहिड़ी अयनांश के साथ निरयण राशिचक्र का उपयोग करता है, और सूर्योदय को सूर्य के ऊपरी किनारे और सामान्य अपवर्तन से लेता है। इनसे तिथि, नक्षत्र, योग और करण, चांद्र मास (अमांत और पूर्णिमांत), और दिन का वह भाग निकाला जाता है जिस पर किसी पर्व का नियम निर्भर है, जैसे सूर्योदय, मध्याह्न, अपराह्न, प्रदोष या निशीथ (अर्धरात्रि)।

हर पर्व का एक लिखित नियम है, जैसे "मध्याह्न में व्याप्त चैत्र शुक्ल नवमी"। कुछ नियमों में धर्मसिंधु और निर्णयसिंधु के अपवाद हैं, जैसे उत्तर भारतीय पंचांग उन्हें लागू करते हैं, उदाहरण के लिए भद्रा से बचने के लिए होलिका दहन या रक्षा बंधन का दिन बदलना। जहाँ स्मार्त और वैष्णव तिथियाँ भिन्न हों, वहाँ दोनों अलग दी जाती हैं। जब तक किसी शहर का नाम न हो, तिथियाँ नई दिल्ली के लिए हैं।

तिथियों की जाँच

गणना की गई तिथि तभी प्रकाशित होती है जब कम से कम दो ऑनलाइन पंचांग वही तिथि दें और कोई भिन्न तिथि न दे। यदि निर्णायक क्षण किसी तिथि की सीमा से पंद्रह मिनट के भीतर हो, तब भी तिथि रोकी जाती है, क्योंकि विधि या स्थान का छोटा सा अंतर दिन बदल सकता है। यदि बाद में कोई संदर्भ किसी प्रकाशित तिथि से असहमत हो, तो अंतर समझ आने तक वह तिथि हटा ली जाती है।
