About this text

The Gayatri Mantra is a verse of the Rigveda (3.62.10), traditionally associated with the sage Vishvamitra and named after its gayatri metre. It is addressed to Savitr, the divine power of the sun, and asks that his radiance inspire our thought. In recitation it is preceded by Om and the three vyahritis, bhur bhuvah svah (earth, atmosphere, heaven), which are not part of the Rigvedic verse itself. In Vedic chanting it carries accent marks that are not shown on this page.

How it is recited

It is traditionally recited at sunrise and sunset as part of sandhya worship, often 108 times on a mala. Some traditions have rules about who may recite it and how it is learned; practices vary.
