Ganga Aarti (Om Jai Gange Mata) ·

The aarti "Om Jai Gange Mata", sung to the river Ganga as a mother who grants every wish and carries her devotees across.

oṁ jaya gaṃge mātā śrī jaya gaṃge mātā । jo nara tumako dhyātā manavāṃchita phala pātā ॥

Om, glory to Mother Ganga, glory to the holy Mother Ganga; whoever meditates on you gains the fruit their heart desires.

caṃdra sī jota tumhārī jala nirmala ātā । śaraṇa paṙe jo terī so nara tara jātā ॥

Your light is like the moon's, your waters flow pure; whoever falls at your feet for refuge is carried across.

putra sagara ke tāre saba jaga ko jñātā । kṛpā dṛṣṭi tumhārī tribhuvana sukha dātā ॥

You saved the sons of Sagara, as all the world knows; your gracious glance gives happiness to the three worlds.

eka hī bāra jo terī śaraṇāgati ātā । yama kī trāsa miṭā kara parama gati pātā ॥

Whoever comes to you for refuge even once is freed from the terror of Yama and reaches the highest state.

āratī māta tumhārī jo jana nitya gātā । dāsa vahī sahaja meṃ muktti ko pātā ॥

Mother, the devotee who sings your aarti every day gains liberation with ease.

About this text

Om Jai Gange Mata is the best-known aarti of the river Ganga, sung on the ghats of Haridwar and Varanasi and in homes on Ganga Dussehra and other days sacred to the river. Its five short stanzas praise her moonlike light and pure waters, recall that she saved the sons of King Sagara, and promise that whoever takes refuge in her even once is freed from the fear of Yama and reaches the highest state. The opening lines are sung again as a refrain after each stanza. Editions differ slightly in wording; most print मुक्त्ति in the last line, a common spelling of मुक्ति (liberation), which this page follows.

How it is recited

It is sung with a lamp at the evening Ganga aarti, on Ganga Dussehra, Ganga Saptami and Kartik Purnima, and after bathing in the river. Customs vary.
