Saraswati Vandana (Ya Kundendu): Meaning

Ya Kundendu is the best-known prayer to Saraswati, recited in schools and before study across India. In one long verse it describes her appearance, all in white, and asks her to protect the speaker and remove every trace of dullness of mind.

She who is white as the jasmine, the moon, snow and a pearl necklace, who is dressed in pure white; whose hands are adorned with the excellent veena, who is seated on a white lotus; who is always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the other gods: may that goddess Saraswati, who removes every trace of dullness, protect me.

Lines 1–2: she is "white as jasmine, the moon, snow and a pearl necklace", clothed in white, her hands adorned with the veena and the staff of boons, seated on a white lotus. White here stands for purity and clarity, the qualities of true knowledge.

Line 3: she is "always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the other gods", meaning that even the highest gods depend on knowledge.

Line 4: "May that blessed Saraswati protect me, she who removes dullness completely." Jadya is the heaviness or inertia of mind that blocks learning; the prayer is not only for information but for alertness and understanding.
