Roman-script lyrics with English meaning. Read it in Devanagari.

bhaja govindan bhaja govindan govindan bhaja mudhamate | samprapte sannihite kale nahi nahi rakshati dukrinkarane ||

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, you fool! When the appointed hour of death is near, the rules of grammar will not save you, no, not at all.

mudha jahihi dhanagamatrishnan kuru sadbuddhin manasi vitrishnam | yallabhase nijakarmopattam vittan tena vinodaya chittan ||

Fool, give up your thirst to amass wealth; turn your mind to good thoughts, free of craving. Be content with whatever comes to you through your own work.

naristanabharanabhidesham drishtva maga mohavesham | etanmansavasadivikaram manasi vichintaya varan varam ||

Seeing a woman's body, do not fall into infatuation; it is only a changing form of flesh and fat. Reflect on this in your mind again and again.

nalinidalagatajalamatitaralam tadvajjivitamatishayachapalam | viddhi vyadhyabhimanagrastan lokan shokahatan cha samastam ||

Life is as unsteady as a drop of water on a lotus leaf; know that the whole world is gripped by disease and pride and stricken with grief.

As long as you can earn money, your family is fond of you; later, when your body grows frail with age, no one at home even asks after you.

yavatpavano nivasati dehe tavat prichchhhati kushalan gehe | gatavati vayau dehapaye bharya bibhyati tasminkaye ||

As long as breath dwells in the body, they ask at home how you are; once the breath has left and the body falls, even your wife fears that corpse.

The child is absorbed in play, the youth in young women, the old man in worries; no one is absorbed in the supreme Brahman.

ka te kanta kaste putrah sansaro'yamativa vichitrah | kasya tvan kah kuta ayatah tattvan chintaya tadiha bhratah ||

Who is your wife? Who is your son? This world is very strange. Whose are you? Who are you? Where have you come from? Think on this truth here and now, brother.

satsangatve nissangatvan nissangatve nirmohatvan | nirmohatve nishchalatattvan nishchalatattve jivanmuktih ||

From the company of the good comes non-attachment; from non-attachment, freedom from delusion; from freedom from delusion, the unmoving truth; from the unmoving truth, liberation in this life.

vayasi gate kah kamavikarah shushke nire kah kasarah | kshine vitte kah parivarah jnate tattve kah sansarah ||

When youth is gone, where is lust? When the water dries up, where is the lake? When wealth is gone, where is the family? When the truth is known, where is the world of birth and death?

ma kuru dhanajanayauvanagarvan harati nimeshatkalah sarvan | mayamayamidamakhilam hitva brahmapadam tvan pravisha viditva ||

Do not be proud of wealth, people or youth; time takes them all away in a moment. Leave all this, which is made of illusion, and knowing Brahman, enter into it.

dinayaminyau sayan pratah shishiravasantau punarayatah | kalah kridati gachchhhatyayuh tadapi na munchatyashavayuh ||

Day and night, dusk and dawn, winter and spring come again and again; time plays, life runs out, and still the wind of desire does not let go.

ka te kanta dhanagatachinta vatula kin tava nasti niyanta | trijagati sajjanasangatireka bhavati bhavarnavatarane nauka ||

Why worry about wife and wealth, you madman? Is there no one who rules over you? In the three worlds, only the company of the good is the boat for crossing the ocean of birth.

    dvadashamanjarikabhirasheshah kathito vaiyakaranasyaishah | upadesho'bhudvidya-nipunaih shrimachchhhankara-bhagavachchhharanaih ||

    बारह श्लोकों की इस मंजरी से यह पूरा उपदेश विद्या में निपुण श्रीमद् शंकर भगवत्पाद ने एक वैयाकरण को दिया।

This whole teaching, in a garland of twelve verses, was given to a grammarian by the revered Shankara, master of learning.

One has matted hair, one a shaven head, one has plucked out his hair, another wears ochre robes in many styles: the fool sees and yet does not see; all these disguises are only for filling the belly.

angan galitan palitan mundan dashanavihinan jatan tundam | vriddho yati grihitva dandan tadapi na munchatyashapindam ||

The limbs have weakened, the head is grey, the mouth has lost its teeth; the old man walks leaning on a stick, and still he does not let go of the lump of desire.

agre vahnih prishthebhanuh ratrau chubukasamarpitajanuh | karatalabhikshastarutalavasah tadapi na munchatyashapashah ||

Fire in front, the sun behind, at night sitting with knees to chin, begging into his palms and living under a tree: still he does not let go of the noose of desire.

kurute gangasagaragamanan vrataparipalanamathava danam | jnana vihinah sarva matena muktin na bhajati janmashatena ||

One may go to where the Ganga meets the sea, keep vows or give in charity; but without knowledge, by every teaching, one does not gain liberation even in a hundred births.

sura mandira taru mula nivasah shayya bhutala majinan vasah | sarva parigraha bhoga tyagah kasya sukhan na karoti viragah ||

Living in a temple or under a tree, sleeping on the ground, wearing a deerskin, giving up all possessions and pleasures: whom does such dispassion not make happy?

yogarato va bhogarato va sangarato va sangavihinah | yasya brahmani ramate chittan nandati nandati nandatyeva ||

Whether given to yoga or to pleasure, whether in company or alone, the one whose mind delights in Brahman rejoices, rejoices, rejoices indeed.

bhagavad gita kinchidadhita ganga jalalava kanikapita | sakridapi yena murari samarcha kriyate tasya yamena na charcha ||

One who has read even a little of the Bhagavad Gita, drunk even a drop of Ganga water, and worshipped Murari even once, has nothing to discuss with Yama.

punarapi jananan punarapi maranan punarapi janani jathare shayanam | iha sansare bahudustare kripaya'pare pahi murare ||

Born again, dying again, lying again in a mother's womb: in this world of birth and death, so hard to cross and so endless, save me by your grace, Murari.

rathya charpata virachita kanthah punyapunya vivarjita panthah | yogi yoganiyojita chitto ramate balonmattavadeva ||

Wearing a patched cloak of rags picked from the streets, walking a path beyond merit and sin, the yogi whose mind is fixed in yoga delights like a child or a madman.

kastvan ko'han kuta ayatah ka me janani ko me tatah | iti paribhavaya sarvamasaram vishvan tyaktva svapna vicharam ||

Who are you? Who am I? Where have I come from? Who is my mother, who my father? Reflect thus, see it all as without substance, and leave this world, which is like a dream.

tvayi mayi chanyatraiko vishnuh vyarthan kupyasi mayyasahishnuh | bhava samachittah sarvatra tvan vanchhhasyachiradyadi vishnutvam ||

In you, in me and everywhere else there is one Vishnu; your anger at me, your impatience, is pointless. If you want soon to reach Vishnu's state, be even-minded towards all.

shatrau mitre putre bandhau ma kuru yatnan vigrahasandhau | sarvasminnapi pashyatmanan sarvatrotsrija bhedajnanam ||

Make no effort at war or peace with enemy, friend, son or kin; see your own Self in everything, and give up everywhere the ignorance that sees difference.

kaman krodhan lobhan mohan tyaktva ''tmanan bhavaya ko 'ham | atmajnana vihina mudhah te pachyante narakanigudhah ||

Giving up lust, anger, greed and delusion, reflect on the Self: who am I? Fools without knowledge of the Self are cooked in the depths of hell.

geyan gita nama sahasran dhyeyan shripati rupamajasram | neyan sajjana sange chittan deyan dinajanaya cha vittam ||

Sing the Gita and the thousand names; meditate always on the form of Lakshmi's lord; lead the mind to the company of the good; give your wealth to the poor.

sukhatah kriyate ramabhogah pashchaddhanta sharire rogah | yadyapi loke maranan sharanan tadapi na munchati papacharanam ||

People enjoy women for the sake of pleasure; afterwards, alas, disease comes to the body. Though in this world death is the end of all, still they do not give up sinful ways.

arthamanarthan bhavaya nityan nastitatah sukhaleshah satyam | putradapi dhanabhajan bhitih sarvatraisha vihita ritih ||

Always see wealth as the source of harm; truly, there is not a trace of happiness in it. The rich fear even their own sons; this is the way of things everywhere.

pranayaman pratyaharan nityanitya vivekavicharam | japyasameta samadhividhanan kurvavadhanan mahadavadhanam ||

Control of breath, withdrawal of the senses, discernment between the eternal and the passing, japa joined with the practice of samadhi: do these with care, with great care.

gurucharanambuja nirbhara bhaktah sansaradachiradbhava muktah | sendriyamanasa niyamadevan drakshyasi nija hridayasthan devam ||

Devoted wholly to the lotus feet of the guru, become free of the world of birth and death soon; through this discipline of the senses and the mind, you will see the God who dwells in your own heart.
