Pitru Paksha · पितृ पक्ष

Pitru Paksha is the fortnight in which Hindus honour their ancestors (pitrs) with shraddha rites, offering food and water (tarpan). It is a period, not a single day, ending with Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Dates

2026Sunday, 27 September 2026 – Saturday, 10 October 2026
2028Monday, 4 September 2028 – Monday, 18 September 2028

Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.

How the date is determined

From Ashwin (purnimanta) Krishna Pratipada to Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Each ancestor's shraddha is performed on the tithi of their death; food is offered to brahmins, cows, crows and the needy. Those who do not know the tithi perform it on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. New purchases and celebrations are usually avoided.

Regional and tradition differences

The Purnima Shraddha on the day before is often counted with the fortnight. The dates shown are for the fortnight from Pratipada to Amavasya, as the panchangs we check give them.
