Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.

How the date is determined

Shravana Shukla Panchami prevailing at sunrise (North-Indian date).

Images of serpents are drawn or made and worshipped with milk, flowers and turmeric; some visit snake shrines. Digging the earth is traditionally avoided on this day.

Regional and tradition differences

Some regions keep the festival on Shravana Krishna Panchami instead. Wildlife groups ask that live snakes not be fed milk, which harms them; worship of images is the traditional form.
