Dates
Dates and times are for New Delhi (Asia/Kolkata). They can differ in other places, especially outside India, and between traditions.
How the date is determined
Kartika (purnimanta) Krishna Chaturthi prevailing at moonrise.
Women fast from sunrise until moonrise, often without water, worship Shiva, Parvati and Ganesh in the evening with a karwa (earthen pot), hear the vrat katha, and break the fast after sighting the moon through a sieve.
Regional and tradition differences
Moonrise time differs from city to city, so the time to break the fast should be checked for one's own location.
