Holi · होली

Holi, the festival of colours, is celebrated on the day after Holika Dahan, at the start of the month of Chaitra in the North-Indian calendar. It celebrates the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil, and in Braj it is tied to the play of Radha and Krishna.

How the date is determined

The day after Holika Dahan (Chaitra Krishna Pratipada in the purnimanta calendar).

People play with coloured powder (gulal) and water, visit friends and family, and share sweets such as gujiya. Old quarrels are traditionally set aside.

Regional and tradition differences

Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana celebrate over several days (including Lathmar Holi). The bonfire the evening before is described on the Holika Dahan page.
